Was thinking about the film, 'The Fountain' and it got me thinking about eternal life, If you could live forever

Would you really want to?

and what would you do?

EDIT: you stay the age you currently are and CANT kill yourself. Kinda like Vandal Savage

If I'm young forever then sure. The last couple million years/eternity would kind of suck though, various ends of the universe and such.

It depends, if I was ageless but could still die then maybe. I'd hate to be completely immortal, that would be a fate worse than death.

Never got this argument. You have a pretty high chance of seeing all your loved ones pass away without immortality. If you were immortal you could pretty much be a real life super hero (or villain if you're so inclined), you could save countless lives. Sure it would be sad but the gains far outweigh the negatives (for the first couple million years at least). Only real argument is "I don't want to spend several million/billion/eternities roasting to death/being compacted into nothingness/dying of lack of oxygen and radiation sickness."

it has merit, loved ones means everyone you care about, your mum and da are given, but your wife children, grandchildren, great grand children. If you re marry she will die as well it goes on and on and on

What could you do that you couldn't do now? Assuming nobody can know you're ageless because then the government would probably experiment on you..there isn't really much you could do, it's not like you were super in any way.

If I could live forever than I think my life wouldn't really have a purpose. I mean don't get me wrong I want to live fora VERY long time, but there would be serious problems with living forever I think. For one if you fell in love than that means they'll die and you'll still be around and never see them again after death(if you believe in that) and you'll be witnessing all the wars and suffering that occur forever and ever. And not really being able to intervine and do anything, plus there would be other issues like if you have a family and they die even your kids but your still here and you outlived them. Kind of sad....

If we all lived forever then life wouldn't really have a purpose becasue we wouldn't feel the need to improve ourselves before we died. Death does have a purpose I guess, the thing is to live your life the best you can until you die. And not beinng able to die sort of takes away the meaning of that, if that makes any sense?

Again I am NOT saying that people should die nor am I suicidal. I'm just giving my answer, but again I want everyone to live as long as possible.

See, I don't get answers like this. So you want to travel the world? With that exactly? Does living forever instantly give you access to lots of money?

Not forever, but I would like a choice in when I die without the various bad afterlifes all the religions say will happen if you kill yourself (if one of them happen to be right). Otherwise, I'd love living thousands of years to see scientific progress, but all the deaths of people I love would be depressing.

Depends if I stopped aging when I reached 30 or something. If so, then I would work for about 100 years and save all the cash, put it in the bank and live off the interest.

Actually yeah. There's plenty of jobs where you can make huge money very quickly if you don't mind the risk. If you can't die then you may as well go for those.

What would I need money for? If i'm invincible, I'm going under the understanding that I'd no longer need food, water or sleep to survive.

Hmm, I'm thinking of a different kind of thing then. I'm just thinking of living forever in the the sense that you're ageless but still human in every sense.

You know what now that I think about it life would get pretty boring after 100 years or so. You won't be able to get real friends cus they'll keep dieing and you'll just live. If you try to start a family they'll die eventually and you'll continue to live. Sure you could do whatever you want and see how technology advances and stuff but in the end you'll be lonely and wish you were dead... Meh I don't think I want to be immortal anymore lol.

Tbh, if one were to obtain immortality it'd become a normal thing to them. While it sounds cruel to say it, it'd be like seeing a beloved pet die. It's something that's bound to occur and you'd just have to accept as an integral aspect of your immortal reality. Nothing aside from you would last forever, so you'd have to accept that everything else is merely temporary to you. It wouldn't be much different from the many realities everyone has to accept into their lives.

no because once humanity dies off, you will be alone for billions and billions of years. You'd drive yourself insane. Eventually you will find yourself stuck in a gravitational pull of some sort of object, and then won't be able to move. Stuck suspended, for eternity.

You'd be drifting for all eternity, and since the universe will most likely keep on expanding it'll get to a point where you wouldn't see or find anything.

No. Many reasons, for one thing i am bored as it is with life.

Also this boredom i feel would eventually make me turn to do immoral things for an adrenaline rush. I'm too moral for that.

If i live past 50 i'll be gutted.

Not really. If we never aged then maybe, but I would't want be old and working for nothing. I certainly wouldn't want to retire at 65 either and spend forever on retirement. I'd go insane, and pension doesnt pay that much so you cant constantly do things everyday.

The thing is why I asked the question is while watching 'the fountain' the scenes with Hugh jackman's charater in that buble flying into the nebula made me write theOP. It is about asking you guys, not really if you could live forever, but if you could with yourself forever?

no...I wouldn't want to live forever...I want to experience death, because who knows what happens after you die. And I'm not talking about heaven or hell, I'm talking about something more realistic and harmonious.

What I meant by 'anyone else' was other people, not just one particular person. Why? I have my reasons but don't feel like sharing.

What if they piss you off? D: that would suck monkey balls.

I would definitely take the offer. Gives you all the time in the universe to learn all of its secrets. You might find a way to ascend to a higher plan of existence if there is one, or you would simply spend all eternity by yourself, unless you mastered the ability to materialize a new universe and play god with your new creation. :D
