does anyone ever stay in programming? i see so many people start out then realise "NOOOOPE not for me". out of a class of 30 only 15 graduated in my year and of those 15 only a few did well and had an interest in the programming side.
i was one of them that did have an interest (it was my highest scoring set of modules). on paper i should be very interested in it. i read several computer mags a month, have been learning about computers since i got my first one and all my pinned tabs are related to computer stuff. but i got my first programming gig after college and realised "god this is crap". i havent done any programming in the years since. in the end i probably just dont have the right head for it. ideal programmers have industry experience and have a proven track record of projects (including contributing to OSS projects) before they leave college. i never had the energy to do all that and complete the course :S.
anywho i just want a job that pays enough for the basics and a few extras and that doesnt demand all my time. im not interested in climbing any ladder or burning the midnight oil for that next promotion or any of that. at the moment, if my employer gave me the choice of more holidays or pay rise i would take the holidays.
im very much on the work to live scale of things. my job isnt even in the top 10 most important things i do and, ideally, i would like to spend less time at it. i do turn up for work on time and do my best while i am there of course and i dont create fuss and do get on with the team. but at the end of the day its just something i do to pay the bills. it doesnt give me a sense of purpose or anything like that.
so is there any career like that? flexi time, low pressure, easy going, 4 day week and where a deadline is just something you wave at as you pass it by :P.
im guessing not :(.
