Lets pretend that you have just realized that you are the only person that exists and everyone else is just a emotionless avatar going through the motions creating the illusion of other people. Could you deal with the fact of not knowing anybody is real?

See this raises a huge question, is what you experience/see actually real? Maybe everything in this world was invented by you, and you are experiencing it. Maybe you are another person entirely, in an incredibly sad state and this is your "happy place" or maybe you are an insane person in an asylum and this is what goes through your head all day. Maybe none of this exists and you are just a brain hooked up to a machine that plays your life while another species examines it.

Nope. Thinking does not define existence.. it's a common flaw in perception many humans attempt to rationalize around giving them the illusion of more control then they really have. An individual or one person is not so important that they're creating their own realities. It's much more practical that reality is a collective effort with or without forethought.

that or your average solipsist. but few really believe it, in their "heart". Those that do, are escapists, not really practitioners of solipsism. Regarding sociopaths, they tend to process their solipsist reasoning with a heavy doze of "intellectualization", which is a form of cognitive self-therapy, but by effect, leaves much actual philosophical science to be desired, when scrutinizing their actions in relation to their reasoning behind their actions. A more precise relation to the OP would simply be the ancient sophist greeks. :3

Plus It's more likely that we just exist, some people seem to think it's more likely we're some sort of video game thing but that's even more ridiculous because beings had to exist in the first place to create the game, so that's even less likely than just existing

man that didn't come out right, I can't word it correctly. Put it this way

1) Humans existing
2) Humans existing in a video game but being controlled by other beings existing.

Obviously the video game one is less likely than just existing

No. Actually psychopaths belive that people exists just like you and me. The difference is that they can't feel empathy. So to we exist...but we don't matter to them unless we can be used. Its not that they belive we don't exist its that they don't care aboutus as people.

Psychopath's believe a wide variety of things...Some think they are liberating people by freeing them of the pressures of life, others torture their victims until they beg for death so they can say "I am no longer a muderer, I am helping someone with a wish." I feel bad for the latter of the two, could you imagine being tortured for so long and so bad that you actually want to die just so you can escape the pain? I get shudders thinking about it.

Speaking of this, anyone ever see that movie where the guy hooks his victims up to a machine that works faster at killing the victim with every additional viewer it gets on the internet? I can't remember what it was called, but he was sick too, and the saddest part is, I bet people would actually WATCH it and not care if it was real. Hell, people watch others die on the internet all the time, for example that reporter who was caputred in Iraq and had his head sawed off. :( Now I never watched this video, and never will, I could not live with myself knowing I watched someone die willingly.

while i wont disagree with your definition of what goes as a general state of sociopathy, some sociopaths do actually harbour ideologies or values that resemble solipsism or an escapist state of mind, where they actively "dematerialize" this world while substituting it with a reality of their own. But that is certainly not a trait unique to sociopaths, so it doesent have any descriptive value over it. Just sayin´ that 1oh1nin1 waesen´t really wrong in his/her presumption.

Yes well that is why I don't hold philosophy in quite the same regard as others I've seen do. This is a hypothetical thread though so I think it's allowed.

I picked up a philosophy book once. It was written by some guy with a totally stupid mustache. I couldn't finish it because he wouldn't shut the %^$% up about some guy named Zarathustra and what he "spoke" and so forth. I'll take my philosophy from the Matrix over that drivel anyday.

I'd wager the majority of people don't even READ anymore at all, besides Twilight and Harry Potter. Which don't count. It's sad to say that, but reading is being cast aside as video game and television popularity arise, and books are the best medium of entertainment. The other night I finally started reading my copy of "I Am America and So Can You!" that I got for Christmas last year...and it's probably funnier than any episode of the Colbert Report I've ever seen, so much hidden humor. I really enjoyed the chapter on religion where he explains why Islam is just as good as Christianity, hiding the joke that if he insults it like he did the other religions the extremists wouldn't be happy with him. :P

This is called Solipsism by the way. And yeah, it's pretty cool to think about. The only I know for sure is that I am a rational, autonomous being. I can't say the same for anyone else. What if this is all in my head? I control everyone else without even knowing it. I'm unable to make them do exactly what I want, but instead, they follow certain rules and guidelines that i'd set out in my head unbeknown to myself. What if I'm God, and I don't even know it? How can we disprove it? How can I know for sure? Are there actually people outside of my house right now, or will they only appear when I decide to look. Does Europe, or Asia, or anywhere else I'm not even exist until I get there?
