I'm currently working on a research paper and I'm having difficulty finding an answer to this question.

So, if you had to ban alcohol, smoking (just tobacco), or the proliferation gambling which one would you pick?

Your answers in the poll are much appreciated and will help steer me the in right direction for my paper.

Also, please feel free to discuss it and elaborate on why you chose what you did. Any and all ideas are helpful for me.

Thanks a bunch guys!

I'd go with smoking, being as it's something that I will never do, and it's something that I hate being around. Gambling is a close second with alcohol a distant third.

It's a tough choice between gambling and smoking, but I guess I'd go with smoking.

Most likely smoking because I can't stand the smell/taste of the air when people smoke.

Smoking without question. Alcohol isn't always a bad thing, but there are no long-term benefits for smoking.

Smoking. Gambling is fine so long as you dont let it take over your life, and alcohol is harmless if you're sensible about it. There are pretty much no upsides to smoking.

I wouldn't want to ban any, because the substances they involve are impossible to control. Prohibition has alreay failed with alcohol, and its not like growing tobacco is difficult, it can be grown anywhere.

Gambling is even more impossible. How do you ban gambling? You might as well ban television.

But I guess of those...smoking...

If one HAD to be banned, then I'd choose smoking. I don't have a problem with either one's existence though.

I guess when I say gambling, I mean more the spread of casinos, because that's more of what my paper is about. In 1978 there were casinos in two states. There are now casinos in 19 states. So maybe rephrase the gambling portion to "the proliferation of gambling."

1. tobacco 2. drinking (huge gap) 3. gambling gambling doesnt physically hurt anyone, just financially. if people are stupid enough to gamble away all their money, they deserve to be poor (or if they live in the US, live on the street). gambling is not addictive in the same way that smoking and drinking. you dont become PHYSICALLY addicted to it, so basically, banning gambling would just hurt stupid people (which is why i wouldnt have banned it) while not banning alcohol and tobacco would hurt UNFORTUNATE people.

Here's an interesting little statistic about the health of smokers. 100% of smokers today are alive.

Banning smoking or drinking would lead to dangerous criminal trade (as seen in the Prohibition), but there isn't really a product in gambling. So in that sense, banning gambling would be much less detrimental to society. In fact, gambling is banned in many places.

It's possible to drink responsibly, and small amounts of alcohol can have a good effect.

Gambling is fun as long as you don't over-do it. And in some cases, what's considered gambling is actually skill-based.

Tobacco... if I have to choose, that's the one I'd ban. It's always unhealthy, doesn't matter how little you use. It's the "drug" that kills the biggest amount of people.

With that said, I'm against any ban. Changing things now would only lead to chaos and black-market sales.

If I had to, it would definitely be smoking. As much as I like a cigar now and then, I definitely love alcohol. I'm not a massive gambler, but if you do it in small doses then it can be extremely fun.

Well, none of them since black markets would immediately spring up (the 18th amendment resulted in the infamous mobs of Chicago in the 20's). However, I think many people underestimate the damage gambling can cause. I still can't believe many states (including my own) use the lottery to raise money.

Well tobacco kills more (in America at least) per year than alcohol does, and gambling does not screw with the body (directly), so I'll say tobacco.

Gambling can be just as bad an addictiction as alcohol or smoking, and you don't have to be stupid to become addicted.
