Now before you dismiss my statement by saying I am crazy, hear me out first.
I think the biggest problem is that people think of aliens as how they are portrayed on tv and in movies - funny and/or scary looking creatures that live on other planets. But nobody ever considers the possibility that "aliens" are just humans and other forms of life from the future.
It's no secret that man has been searching for years for a way to make time-travel possible. And maybe years from now, they will eventually find it.
We already know that the Earth will eventually become inhospitable, and that given the right weather conditions, other planets can eventually become hospitable in Earth's place.
Let's say that hundreds of years from now Earth dies out and human civilization has found a new home on other planets. That could explain why we believe "aliens" exist in what is currently known as outer space. Also, since humans and other creatures evolve over time, that could explain why "aliens" look so much different than humans do now. Finally, since humans will not make "outer space" their home for centuries to come, that would explain why we can't find any trace of life on other planets now - because it simply doesn't exist yet.
Now let's say that hundreds (or even thousands) of years from now, humans do find out what makes time-travel possible. I'm sure they will venture back in time to study the Earth as it is today, but since they don't want to take any action that will drastically change our future, they would need to do so in a way that doesn't disrupt our society, hence the reason why nobody can provide tangible proof of "alien encounters".
I don't believe that the existence of "aliens" is that outrageous. I just think the problem is there is a gross misconception of exactly what "aliens" are.
