I'm a guy. Should I have known about a woman's menstrual cycle and childbirth?

I was never taught about sex or anything close to it in school. I live in a sexually suppressed nation.

I have no interest in pursuing a career in obstetrics and gynecology, and I'm a male homo sapiens. Does that mean I should not know about what a woman goes through, and how exactly child birth occurs or how a woman gives birth?

I mean is that really right for me not to know?

Uhm, if you haven't heard of it or been taught it then there's nothing wrong. Couldn't hurt you to research it if you feel you should know about it, though.

l already have the Internet, that's not the issue.

The thing is... don't you think there's something seriously wrong with this country in the way it works? I don't want it to be like the West where they overglorify sexuality and stuff, but at the same time... there's just something wrong going on here.

Did you learn while at school or did your parents teach you? Also what age?

Learned from a variety of sources, but school pretty much clarified it all. I was in 7th grade at the time. Middle school.

I had thegeneral idea and thought i knew almost everything at 13. When i was 14 school taught me the rest. I could tell you how it happens but i would rather not. Thank god we had a good health teacher. The only problem was he was funny so he made jokes andwe couldn't help but laugh.

If you don't want the shock of finding out when it happens, read up on it, or ask a girl who doesn't mind talking about it. Otherwise you will find out when you live with a girl, and you will DEFINITELY when she becomes pregnant. Have fun!!

I think it's all right. I didn't even know a girl had different private parts till HS. For the menstrual cycle, I just heard what happens but don't really get it. I don't think knowing these trivial facts are necessary. As for child birth, you should know how pregnancy occurs at least. :)

I don't want to be a doctor. I just am confused by the concept of a creature that bleeds for 7 days and does not die, if I am told correctly. I have no idea why it happens, and I wish an informed, licensed to teach person on the matter would explain. Wikipedia can only do so much when the very concept itself confuses me, for example.

Also childbirth and dilation and so much other stuff. For the longest time I used to... Well I thought that they would cut up a woman's stomach, take the baby out and then stitch it back up, and that's how a child is born.

You really should at least have the basics. I learned most of this stuff in eighth grade. It wasn't that bad. If you don't at least have the basics your live could go horribly awry.

Well, the reason a woman bleeds, is when her uterus is 'shedding' and cleaning out the egg that hasn't been fertilized, so that she can become pregnant again 30 days later. The menstrual period is also there to clean the vagina the same way the uterus gets cleaned. The reason for the 'blood' is the goop the egg would get stuck in, if fertilized, and become a foetus. What little blood is actually lost during those seven days is around two decilitres, if not less. The reason a woman can give birth to a child is because the walls of the vagina are very flexible, and that the hip-bones and pelvis are flexible and can 'pop out' of their normal places during birth. The reason it takes so long for labour to birth to happen is because the body has to enlarge itself, so the child can have safe passage. Also, the skull of the baby has a soft spot, so it can be pushed through the pelvis.

BTW, the rhythm method is NOT safe by any means. Unless your on the fence about having kids and want to leave it up to chance. I think it's 50-70% effective when done RIGHT.

If a couple of actively trying to conceive, sure. But you need to rely on chemicals or physical barriers in order to truly prevent pregnancy. Women can conceive at any time during their menstrual cycle, I think that's the most important thing guys need to know about it.

Knowing the basics of what a woman goes through every month, and of child birth, would be great. You don't need to know the details but understanding on a general level will probably do you a favor.

Lad, it's your duty to find ye a lass
With child-bearing hips and a pink, supple ass
And make her your wife and love her with love so true
Now some rivers run high, some rivers run low
When her river runs red, then she's starting her flow
And it's called menstr'ation, and here's what it means to you

You will notice her bloomers are spotty at first
Stand back – her ovarian dam's gonna burst
Son, don't be afraid, it's a natural t'ing
Just wad up some cotton and hand her some string
Put the old linens on top of the bed
Get out of the house and go down to the old pub instead

She'll retain her water, her breasts will be tender
And every third word that you say will offend her
Get out of the house and go down to the old pub instead
And she'll want to make love – if you do, you're a fool
'Cause you'll only end up with a bloody O'Toole
Get out of the house – down to the old pub instead

And she'll want you to sample the fruit of her loins
But son, it'll taste like some old rusty coins
So turn off the light, boy, and take off your hat
And drop to your knees, say a prayer to Saint Pat
Then he'll give you the strength to get out of the bed
And for Ireland's sake, go down to the old pub instead

Now the pub is the place where the lads are a-meetin'
When the moon's full and the gals are a-bleedin'
The Catholic, the Protestant, even the pagan
The pub is the place when your lady is raggin'
So drink of your pint, boys, and thank your shamrocks
That as menfolk we don't have to bleed from our cocks
And that we can escape from the lady in red
And get out of the house and go down to the old pub instead

That's called natural method, instead of using condoms/taking pills, just wait 5 days before or 5 years after your wife's menstruation and you should not worry about your wife getting pregnant unreadily.

P.S. I just learnt it from my teacher :P

*scratches head* Your teacher is stupid. The birthcontrol pill is to be taken once every day, in 21 days. Then you have a pause, to get your period, where you can't get pregnant because the egg is being flushed out, and start up again on a new packet that last 21 days. Lather, rinse and repeat unless you want to have a kid, simply stop eating the pills.

*shrug* that is some of the things you will learn when you get a girlfriend/wife...

And belive me, when you learned about it, you will spent the rest of your life trying to forget it again :\

But if it it something everyone should have a deep knowlage of? well even in the west it is not all that common really (again untill you get a gf). To learn the basics of it is perhaps something of a nice signal to send, but in depth? Well I have this odd notion, that the Womans menstrual cycle was one of the main reasons the Vikings went out to pillage/trade, when that time of month comes, its just best to leave the country for a few weeks ;)

Good thing that you pointed that out. I might have mistaken you for a lizard or a libertarian. :P

I guess it depends on your age. If you plan to have a relationship at some time though, I'd recommend having knowledge of these things first.

If you ever plan to get a girlfriend, then yeah, you probably should know.If you've ever taken biology, then yeah, you should've known. I don't think it's really a hugely bad thing, Wikipedia (or a short chapter in a biology textbook) will sort you out. Personally, I find it pretty important to know, despite being male. Though, it's not that big of a deal when I think about it.

All you need to know is that women are unclean during, and for five days after, their monthly cycle, and should not be touched during this time.

If you live in the Middle-East or something, your story is quite believable, and it doesn't surprise me that you don't know. Some countries over there live with an ideaology that the West threw away centuries ago. I feel sorry for them, actually.
