Ender's Game is a great book. So is Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy.

Galactic North & Necropath are both good reads. if you want a bigger list feel free to PM me at any point in time about it. I'm working on my goal of reading 100 SF books. Oh Dune is another one worth checking out from what I've been told. Its next on my list

don't read any of the new Sci-fi.. Majority of the new sci-fi is so similar to fantasy.. that you don't get a whole lot out of it.

You want to be reading stuff like Childhood's End by Arthur C. Clark

In particular, the original Dune Novels by Frank Herbert. The later novels by his son are questionable.

You wouldn't think so, but most of the Star Wars books are very good (beware some are extremely corny).

Its a long time ago though :P

Shatterpoint, Darth Bane, or The New Jedi Order are good.

DUNE is god of sci-fi,i remember trying to read children of dune in hospital high on morphine.....it didnt work out.40k books are also good sci-fi books if you like it to focus on action a bit more than normal, the horus heresy series is awesome especially SPOILERS!!!! the bit were Horus finally betrays The Emperor and virus bombs the planet of istvann, the description for Exterminatus is so much better than i ever imagined it would be playing 40k for good 10 years.Hell even my mum likes them which surprised me,she wanted a book to read for work and picked my book up in a hurry, then had to wait a week for her to finish so i could get it back lol

Although not up to scratch with Franks novels, they are still enjoyable.

Oh too true mate, I think I was talking more in a comparative sense as opposed to a stand alone sense.

Hitchikers Guide to the Galaxy is a standard Sci-fi book, I'm not much into fantasy, but it's the book I'm reading right now, and it's...really funny.

If you don't mind thousands of years in the future, the entire Dune Saga is your best bet. In my opinion they are the greatest works of science fiction in existence.

EDIT: Just to make sure I'm clear, by Saga I mean the ones written by Frank Herbert himself. Dune, Dune Messiah, Children of Dune, God Emperor of Dune, Heretics of Dune, and Chapterhouse Dune.

I'm not a fan of sci-fi, but I *highly* recommend Snow Crash. It's crazy-awesome. Neuromancer is also worth checking out.

Dune Chronicles (by Frank Herbert, forget about the newer stuff by Brian), Ender's Game and sequels, and Neuromancer, as others have already mentioned, are all fantastic. I would also check out some Robert Heinlein stuff, he was amazing. Specifically, Stranger in a Strange Land is a masterpiece, and is near-future. Also check out Time Enough for Love, one of my very favorites, The Moon is a Harsh Mistress, and Starship Troopers.
