There is this Arab guy at work in his 40s. He was born in Algeria or something and works in the engineering department. He seems like a nice guy. I work in an extremely obese gov. office in the deep south. Could be the worlds fattest place.

This guy shits on fat women all the time. One time he asked an obese woman "how many donuts did you eat , like 5?" Another time he said "did you ladies eat all the cake?" and just laughed in their face. One time a group of fat women came back from a burger restaurant. He said " I can tell you guys went out to eat because your tummies are all falling out." One time he told a group of fat women in their 20s "you guys have great minds, just not great bodies." Shockingly, no one told him what he's doing is wrong.

He's not some right winger or anything either. He has Harris signs on his car and liked Jill Stein and Harris posts on his Facebook. I guess it must be a cultural thing?

My guess is that its normal to insult fat women in his culture unlike in the west? Thoughts?

@bcroger3: is it exclusively women? I'm sure you have fat men working there too.

Not sure what you are trying to say/prove here...

Anyway, assholes be assholes, regardless of culture or where they came from or whatever.

It's normal in the West, too, just not to their face. We have multiple generations of girls and women with eating disorders (and boys and men, too; not fair to exclude them) because of how we treat obese people and our attitude towards food as a result of various pressures.

It might not be as hostile as making fun of someone to their face, but it is every bit as damaging and insulting.

No offense man, but eating disorders are pretty rare these days.

Like 1000X more people die of obesity related illness than eating disorders. I mean go to the ER, esp. in a rural area/the south, how many people are there due to anorexia or other eating disorders vs how many are there due to obesity related illness (heart attack, stroke, out of control blood pressure, type II diabetes complications etc.)

I see the way some obese ppl eat at my office. Its not good. Maybe we need some guys like the one I mentioned to knock some sense into them?

Obesity is often caused by an eating disorder.

You seem to think eating disorders are only anorexia and bulimia, which generally result in underweight people. This is not true.

All stem from mental health issues, however, and worsened with criticism and pressure.

True. I agree.

All i'm saying is to not be too sensitive to constructive criticism over your weight or overall health. I've heard (on multiple occasions) women at my work place complain because their doctor told them to lose weight. THAT is wrong, because the doctor is simply looking out for you.

I am very much left leaning/anti Trump (look at my form posts) and I am against science denial from both side. The right claiming that wearing masks during a deadly globel pandemic are bad because it offends their dear leader are almost as bad as "healthy at any size" or a culture that permits getting offended a healthcare professional telling one to lose wight.

Not awkward at all.

Someone did something horrible, and you took action.

This is what good people do.

Its not that big of a deal honestly. I mean they are probably the most obese ppl on planet earth. People may not point it out, but they do notice. Its better not to say anything though, I keep it to my self.

I mean if they have that much of an issue with it, at least give the man a warning before firing him. FIRE him only if its continued

If you have an issue with him yet you're nervous about talking to HR about it, then I recommend you pulling him to the side when it's convenient and explain you are not cool with this behavior and it's making others uncomfortable as well.

He can possibly be unaware and this can correct his behavior; or if he persists just talk to HR about it.

Take him aside and tell him it's wrong, and that you'll go to HR/management if it doesn't stop. Not sure the need to bring in politics.

Why is it awkward? Is standing up for yourself awkward? Is standing against bullying, abuse, and harassment awkward? Is it awkward for these people to be obese and, by extension, anything they do is by default awkward?

Sorry man, I know you don't mean to be a jerk but it sounds like you are trying to diminish what a terrible thing this is you are talking about.

If it was a one-and-done sort of comment, fine: some jerk said something shitty and that was it. But this sounds like a regular thing. That's abuse.

This should bug you, especially if you are witness to it. The problem here is you're somehow excusing it because they're fat, it's ok to make fun of them? Or since they know they're fat, they're OK with people making fun of them? Or...something?

Honestly dude I think you might be trolling us because this is kind of outrage bait on your behalf.

No. I think that most women would feel awkward about telling their boss or whomever that a good looking guy made a fat joke against them.

Nah, it's because he is not white.

Is that a joke? I doubt his race has anything to do with it. He actually has a strong British/European accent. (he must have lived in the UK for some time)

If anything, Arab, immigrant and Muslim people get the short end of the stick in most situations. Have you not heard what many have said about Muslims, Syrian refugees, immigrants from Somalia and Haiti? You think that they are treated better than white Americans?

And obesity is not the same as racism, because one can control ones weight but you can't control your weight.

No. Most of the women are black/hispanic themselves.

Seems like you are angry at what this guy says, so you attack his race. And obesity is not the same as racism, because one can control ones weight but you can't control your weight.

How I'm attacking his race? By saying people feel weird about complaining about the Arab dude at work?

Maybe they think that's just how people in his culture talk to women and don't want to be insensitive! Lol

If anything, Obese individuals (esp. obese women) get treated better because people are afraid to say anything about their lifestyle/health because it may offend them. I've heard obese women at my work place complain because a doctor told them to lose weight.

If this story is not an act of fiction, it says a lot about the workers who don't put the kibosh on the harassment of other workers by one individual.
