Hello anyone who decides to read this. I'm writing a report for my English class about inappropriate content in the media from the past and present. I was looking for opinions about explicit lyrics in songs, and was hoping to get a few opinions. I tried looking online, but everything I found said that inappropriate lyrics automatically brainwash anyone. I was just hoping to maybe get both points of view on the matter.

I think your best bet is to look at what the definition of "inappropriate" is in today's society (base it off of things like TV, Movie, and Game ratings), and then some of the stigma behind certain things that people consider inappropriate within society.
My honest opinion is that it depends on who is recieving the content, or so to speak. How impressionable that person is.
In the world of music I am 100% fine with language because of the nature of music- it's meant to tell someone's story or evoke emotion, other times it can be a call to arms for a cause, it can bring us together, or it could be pointless whimsy. In other words, using language is an artistic liscense, at least in my opinion. It still isn't what makes music good, necessarlly. *Looks at all the popular rap artists*
In the case of language, you could listen to some songs for examples.
A good one would be In One Ear by Cage The Elephant, because it's basically Matt Schultz expressing how his critics don't bug him and instead make him fired up. Basically the premise of cursing within the song is used to amplify the feeling (and also stick his finger in the eye of his detractors and say "F**K you"). There are tons of songs that tell stories about all sorts of people, and the one recurring thing I've noticed about those songs is that when people do swear (which isn't usually that much from what I understand), it's putting major emphasis on a certain part of the story. In a song which calls people together for anything, look no further than Rage Against The Machine. Listen to some of their songs and you notice that it's mostly for emphasis, like the other two situations.
Long story short: Cursing in music is good when used for emphasis, but it generally hurts a song more than it helps when it's used too much.
