My friend and I decided to dine at an Indian place for lunch, but before we were able to order he quietly whispered to me about the smell, and about how he was going to vomit. So, of course, we decided to eat somewhere else.

But really? Does Indian food really stink? I think the aromas are strong, but definitely not stinky.

I don't think it stinks but I don't like it regardless.

It's a very rich aroma. People who think it "stinks" are just drama queens.

Don't think I've ever had traditional indian food. Maybe its the curry smell that bothers you? I'll have to check out a Indian restaraunt some time...

What's ironic is that my friend is actually Indian himself. I was like, "how did you fare growing up then?" He replied that his family mostly ate other cuisines, with the rare exception of Indian now and then.

But yeah, Indian food is awesome.

Most food emits some level of stink. It just depends on whether that stink appeals to your nasal palate. Personally I enjoy a good Indian odour.

I like the smell of Indian food. Though I usually have it every week so I'm probably used to it.

Indian food is one of my favorite cuisines. It's aromatic, but it doesn't "stink". You and your friend just sound like a pair of b*tches.

There are some great Indian-Pakistani restaurants in California. You should at least check them out.

I love Indian food, but curry has a strong smell, wouldn't go so far as to call it "stinky", it isn't that it's super unpleasant, but it does give a strong smell nonetheless. My friend moved into an apartment previously occupied by an Indian couple and that place reeked for curry for weeks. I'm fine with an Indian restaurant smelling like curry, wouldn't want my home smelling like it.

Bit harsh. It does smell but I wouldn't say stink as it's not a bad smell. I don't really like Indian food though.

I've never tried it plain. Is it overly tart?

If it's done right, it's just sweet in very mellow way. There's also plain savory lassi, which I also love but it's definitely an acquired taste.

I'm mostly of Greek descent. My friend (the one repulsed by the smell of Indian) is Indian himself if that's what you're asking.

It smells fine. The sticky smell is probably from those perfumes that Indians like to use.

i think it's just a matter of taste. some ppl like it some don't it's a culture thing i guess. like me, im south asian (was born in a little country right beside India) and i've eaten indian food like curry and all that literally everyday of my life. you'd think you get bored of it but i absolutely love it. my mom just cooked some amazing stuff right now pollow rice, roast chicken and some big ass shrimp and just a sh1t load of awesomeness stuff and im going to pig out on it soon.

like i said it's kinda a culture thing. i love eating in general and just love all kinds of food, with the exception of mexican food. it just tastes pretty bland to me probably cuz ive eaten curry everyday and things with so much seasoning and flavour and stuff that it just doesn't appeal to me, but many ppl enjoy it. indian food does smell a lot but i love the smell, many ppl don't cuz they are not used to it.

i also eat with my hands everyday. some people think it's disgusting and barbaric or whatever but it's just how we eat from where i'm from. i also have a pet peeve about wasting food and there are just some parts of chicken and other food that you can't get to with a fork and stuff and i like to eat until my plate is clean and there is nothing but bone left, hell sometimes i munch my ass off on the bones too. it's part of the reason i don't like eating at restaurants and stuff too often. cuz ppl always will leave after eating like only half the meal and complain a lot it just bothers me i dunno. plus my mom makes better food than half the stuff in restaurants anyway lol. id rather eat mcdonalds or burger king (i love fast food) than at a classy restaurant any day.

To me it's one of the least appealing food types in every way (tastes, aroma, appearance, etc). I love pretty much all kinds of ethnic foods but Indian is def my least favorite.

Also, not only does it kinda stink, but the people who eat it every day also stink.  We had some Indian contractors work at our office and holy crap did the entire room they work in stink.  God help you if you got caught in the elevator with them as well lol...stunk like BO mixed with curry.

Very nice people, just smelly :D

It has a strong scent. I wouldn't say it smells like something that would make me puke on an average day, but if I was already ill/pregnant/had heightened sensitivity to strong scents for whatever reason, you can bet I'd avoid it. Whenever I walk past the curry bin in the bulk section of the grocery store I always think of spices and sweaty men. It's not exactly a beautiful smell, but I wouldn't gag at it.

I find it no less "stinky" than the smell of a good hamburger being cooked and just as delicious.Â
