I know that interior drives are not portable but will not be detached easily. Exterior drives are portable, but can easily be detached. Which one is better?

Exterior is good for transporting big files and backups. Interior is faster

I'd like to run exclusively on external hard drives, but unfortunately my computer can't boot USB.

So, that means, exteriors can only work with computers that support these drives, while interiors fit if it fits?

Any computer should be able to use external drives, but not all computers can boot an operating system off of an external drive. I could use an external drive, but I have to have my operating system on an internal drive, because my BIOS won't boot an operating system off of an external drive.

Internal... Faster, more reliable.

The only reasons I can think someone might want an external hard drive were if for some reason they need portable storage, or if they simply don't know how to install and configure an internal hard drive.

Internal for just about everything.

External for the games that I play on the computers in Engineering class.

Interior, no doubt about it! I have an external hooked up to my PS3, it's pretty cool but it uses its own power supply and just takes up more room.

It should adapt to how you use the computer. For a general rule: Interior = programs, games, things that need speed Exterior = portability, back-ups, media (movies, music, pictures, etc...)

There isn't any real differance: both can be detached easily, both can be bus powered and both can run at high speeds. An external hard drive is just an internal in a box.

No, it's all about the interface: some can only boot to SATA and IDE whilst others can also boot to USB and Firewire, the computer dosn't even know where the drive is located.

The external drive is much slower though, USB has a limit on the amount of data going through it. SATA and IDE do aswell but the limit is much bigger. That's why external are shocking for anything that requires to load lots of data into memory.

The external drive I have is pretty loud so I only use it to back things up and move large files. Internal is the best way to store your data and externals are nice to have for portability.

Exteriors for backups, interiors for everything else.

Exterior for games is a bad idea if you're playing anything demanding, you'll increase load times and stutter probably... Interior HD's all the way!!! :D

Internal for everything but media storage/backup. Although if it's just storage for one PC, I keep the drive inside. Thus my current setup of a 750GB main drive, 1.5TB storage drive, and two 1TBs externally in a NAS.

most people I know only use their external hard drives like a giant usb stick. Interior drives are more versatile in my opinion.

Nah, it's not porn. It's mostly Steam games, iTunes shows (in HD, so basically 2GB an episode), and movie rips (both DVD and HD-DVD I did in case my HD-DVD drive dies). The games and iTunes stuff are essentially duplicated, too, mostly because iTunes lack of a redownload option sucks and I don't want to lose them.

That's an easy 2TB of total space right there. Plus photos and music, which is probably another 200GB. I also have yet to sift through my old Windows installation, which eats up a good 600GB of my storage drive. Pull out photos, documents, save files, and then delete the whole thing.

In some ways the more space you have the more careless you are with it. :P
