When you turn in an application for a job, is an interview always expected or could they only interview half of the applicants? I said I could work 15 hrs when 20 hrs is the max and could work in summer and breaks but negative is no work expirence.

Applications generally say "we wish to thank all applicants but only shortlisted candidates will be contacted" or something of the sort. If you don't sound like the kind of person they want to hire at all, you're not getting an interview. They won't waste their time. I'm assuming you're applying to some sort of fast food place, they go through people so fast I'm sure you get contacted unless your application makes you look like a massive dipstick who can't be trusted around anything hot or sharp, or anything with a closing drawer.

It's for my university bookstore. It says if your availability meets ours needs we'll call you. I think I'll get a call back my schedule is easy to work around.

Oh goodness no unless it's a place that desperately needs people and receives very few applicants. I generally would receive a good hundred or so applications within a given week and since it's not easy to work in hours upon hours of interviewing, I would just hit the ones that most met my criteria and would interview two or three a day or week depending upon my schedule.

Of the 30 or so jobs I have applied for in the past few years, I have heard back from about 5. In other words, not necessarily.

There are always at least two phases to the hiring process, the first being looking at resumes and cover letters and throwing away the ones that obviously look like a poor fit, and then only after they've narrowed it down to applicants who seem qualified and capable does the second phase come in which they call people in for interviews. An interview is definitely not a guarantee when one applies for a job.

Didn't need a resume or anything since it's just a basic retail job on campus. I think everything put on the application is positive except the whole no work experience thing. I can work summers and breaks, schedule seems easy to work around and hours I said I could work 15 hours the max is 20.

Jobs at bookstores at school usually draw quite a bit of interests from a lot of people because its so convenient, I wouldn't hold out much hope for it

You don't wait for them to call you. You call them.

one on one is better, group interview you have to make yourself stand out much more and have less time to think

From what you said, I'm guessing you mean, "If they're going to hire me, will they give me an interview first? Or will they just hire me without one?". Well, if they're going to hire you, you're going to do an interview. So yes, expect an interview if you're going to work there. Like others said though, if they don't like your application, they won't even call you. Although for a job like working in a bookstore, it's so simple to learn that it shouldn't matter what work experience you have. These lesser jobs (no offense) make it seem like you have to be a rocket scientist to work there. It's such a joke nowadays.
