There is no direct link between engine volume and the number of cylinders. A larger capacity will typically have more cylinders but it's not a simple as every 0.5L means 1 more cylinder

The amount of liters doesn't have anything to do with how many cylinders/ The BMW M3 has a 4.0 liter and is a V8

This.

And compatibility depends on the individual motors.

Typically, a 5.7L engine would be a V-8. Theoretically, you could take a one-cylinder lawn-mower engine and enlarge it to be 5.7L, but it would be a lot heavier than a 5.7L V-8 and less efficient.

Not really , there can be 6 cilinders in line , like most of the V6's out there , and it would still be a V6.Usually porsches have 6 cylinders in V shape. On thread , pretty much , it's like the poster above me said.

If the cylinders are in line, it's an inline engine, not a V.

Must be a cultural thing then , I dunno ,we call any engine with 6cylinders a v6 here in Brazil , even though the vast majority is in line.

Most Porsches have boxer type motors, where the cylinders are horizontally opposed, therefore called a Flat 6. Subaru uses this design as well.
