I think having a doctorate in anything is something to be proud of, even if it is in something like underwater basket weaving, given the amount of time and effort you have to put into it. Though I don't think having a doctorate in something makes you automatically more educated than someone without a doctorate when you are talking about something unrelated to that doctorate. He might be more educated when it comes to music, but that doesn't make him automatically more educated when it comes to other things. Or maybe I don't make any sense.

I'd say a doctorate in any degree is something to be proud about - they take a long time to receive, and obviously if one was to achieve such a thing then for them it would be very, for lack of a better term/word, "ego-boosting".

yes it's something to be proud about, but it doesn't sound like it would be useful outside of a discussion about music, or making music.

A doctorate as in a Phd?

Takes 7 years of University-level studying at least. Requires gaining both a degree and a masters before becoming obtainable.
It's a pretty big deal.

It is something to be proud of,
but that guy's a dick for going on about it in that way.

I study music, and I can say this: It doesnt mean anything. Anyone who gets a doctorate just so they can be called "doctor" is a loser. I respect my favorite bands much more then any of my music professors. To answer your question: No, it doesnt mean anything.

Better than not having one at all. If he was dedicated to learning about music, I think that's great whether he can find a job or not. It's like my major, it is a lot more competitive than anything unless he wanted to be a teacher.

Yes, as you have to dedicate a great deal of time and effort into getting a doctorate. However, there's no need for him to be arrogant about it in any way.

Yes, even though it may not net a high paying job, you don't have to be super rich to be proud of something. Also, most people who have doctarates can find jobs as scholars, or at least get some work published.

Sure, that level of education is really respectable. I don't know a lot about music studies but I do know that it's a pretty challenging subject. Also, I think that they have to write a lot of papers and learn a lot of music history as well.

Performance, composition, instruction, conducting, writing... there are plenty of ways that it can translate to a job, although instruction would be the most common field that these individuals pursue. It provides a huge advantage to those seeking post-secondary instructional positions, almost to the point that it's a prerequisite for consideration in such a position. And that's exactly why most people pursue the degree.

Don't believe what some may tell you about it being useless. The pay for post-secondary education jobs is much better than average.

Though I have no interest in pursuing a doctoral degree myself, I completely disagree with this assessment. The degree is a testament to one's academic perseverance and ability. It is a guarantee that a person has put forth an enormous effort to become highly and broadly educated in the field. Bluntly stated, one's prospects of making a successful career with music are FAR better with this credential than they are without, because quite frankly, most people who try aren't going to make it as performers.

If you don't respect your teachers and feel academic credentials in the field are meaningless, then why are you studying music?

Absolutely. Putting the amount of effort required for a doctorate is something to be proud of regardless of what it's for. Of course, that doesn't mean this guy should be flaunting around his music doctorate at his cooking job as a sign of prowess.

There's more reason to be proud of a music Phd than a lot of things though music doesn't strike me as a subject where a Phd means much, if he was bragging about a critically aclaimed symphony he'ld written then it would be a different matter.

yup, doctorate in music doesnt mean "I can play a guitar super fast and play dragonforce without missing a note!!!" it means you have received extensive theory aside from practice and not only in a single instrument but in several and also conducting.

what? a music PhD is usually filthy rich...if you think its a job that doesnt pay, you should check again. do you have any idea how much they pay these guys to compose? even if they just conduct, they get paid a********* of money

There is more to music than just performance, or compositions. Musicology (Basically, study of the history of music but there is more to it) fields usually recieve PhD, and would be able to teach at universities, or do research.

I am not sure what the benefits of getting a DMA for performers is, but presumebly to get a teaching job at college (or conducting)

There is a difference between a specialized degree and a useless degree.

Proud because of the hard work to get it? Yes

Overall proud of having doctorate's in music? No

Unless you become a professor and teach music, there's really no other job worthwhile for it.

A degree in it is. Music is one of those fields where a degree isn't needed. None of the great musicians had a PhD in music. Being a musician is not about degrees. and studying music is a joke in and of itself. Cool, you know what people listened to in the past, what good does that do society now? If you're going to school to get a degree in music, you're better off not going at all.

This is a ridiculous post. There are laundry lists of great musicians who've had a phd in music. And if you think that studying music is just learning what people listened to in the past you are very misinformed.

You have warped view of music degrees. Some degrees focus on performance, yes, they don't go to school for the degree, the degree is secondary, they go to school to study with the teacher they want to study for to gain skills to try to be a successful soloist/orchestral member. This includes composition degrees. That is NOT to say the degree is unimportant

Some degrees are educational degrees. There are still music jobs K-12, and those jobs need a music ed degree and sometimes masters.

I think so, but using your degree in an argument like that is just ridiculous.
