I always thought of this as a Disney movie, and it was in Kingdom Hearts. A nice, friendly G rated movie, just like Thumbalina, Snow White, Aladdin, and such... But then I looked up Alice in Wonderland (1996), and it said it explores the darker themes of the novel. So there's novels? How many, and are they actually for young adults? Because, I don't know, the idea of it always just seemed like it was meant to be for kids, but maybe I'm wrong. Plus, there's American McGee's Alice.

it's a very well known fact that the whole thing was inspired by drugs and that the author used them in creating it. so i would say so. Of course there are many different ways to interpret it. Disney made it for kids and Tim burton will make it for Goths.

The movie was based on two books. The books weren't nearly as happy and "Disney" as that cartoon, but they weren't completely dark and demented either. Imagine a frequent drug user writing a children's book to convey the frustrations of growing up. That's Alice in Wonderland.

No wonder the cartoon reminded me of an acid trip.

There is much controversy on how demented alice and wonderland is, Lewis Carrol has been accused of being a pedophile and fallen for a 9 year old alice when he wrote the first book. That mixed with possible drug issues and the second book being more darker because of the time it was written Carrol's father had died and he had a fight with alices family(or something like that) it is considered that Through the look glass took a darker setting reflecting what was going on during his current life.

Actually most of the "kiddy" tales like the Grimm's fairytales were VERY dark.

Children's Story tales were dark in the old days as a means of discplining children and showing harsh consequences.

Alice in Wonderland takes it one step further and can be seen as a brutal critic of society at the time (The Mad Hatter and Lead Poisoning) and the struggle of classes and democracy.

I always thought of this as a Disney movie

DeathScape666

Well, that's the first problem. :P

Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, the title of the original book by Lewis Carroll, was never a particularly lighthearted story. The Tim Burton movie is more just taking it back to its roots, roots which have become obscure due to the association everyone has between the story and the Disney version of it.

Ahh, wait! I do remember that! In sixth grade, for Reading class, our teacher told us about that. We read a lot of the "dark" fairy tales in their original format. I just forgot about it. I remember that Cinderella's sisters got pecked to death by some crows at the end of the book, and one of them cut off their heel to make the shoe fit. Yup, I do recall that. Maybe I will check out those novels, but I am not sure if it being written in 1865 will effect my enjoyment from it. Everyone says William Shakespeare makes amazing stories, but I really didn't like any of them. Yes, I did understand them, because our teachers explained it to us in full detail, but I did not appreciate it. Alice's Adventures in Wonderland's premise interests me, though.

Tim Burton has always been a sort of love-it-or-hate-it/hit-or-miss kind of thing. For example, Planet of the Apes was abhorred, Batman was adored, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was divisive, and people were kind of stupid about Sweeney Todd.

Heh. That's in the musical Into the Woods, too. Although Disney wasn't the first. Rodgers and Hammerstein's version of Cinderella is certainly light fare.

Alice in wonderland is debated to be one massive drug trip the author recorded, that might answer your question.

Yah. Funny thing with Sweeney Todd are the people who just acted completely clueless. One person said "I don't want to see Edward Scissorhands: The Musical." Another person looked up a video of George Hearn, considered the definitive actor in the role, singing "Epiphany," and complained "It isn't supposed to be opera!" Then there were people who complained "wtf it's a musical!" blah blah blah. As someone who's been a fan of Sweeney Todd since before the movie was even announced, some of the comments are particularly asinine.

That story made me cringe and grossed me out.

Disney really did do some massive changes to that story.
