I know it sounds like a copout but I'm not sure really. We have more technological advancements and tolerance now but it seems this country is deep in vanity. Then again you can say that for any time period.

I guess I'll vote dim because kids today are awful

It's going to be a very long time before the US pulls through and is back to it's old self and there's going to have to be a lot of change (real change, not Obama change) before it can start picking it's self back up. It'll happen though, eventually.

Dim, regardless of who gets elected. I think it's time for a fundamental change to how we run things. Almost all of today's politicians are just terrible. Also, our kids aren't self motivated and a lot of them don't have opportunities for a good education.

Dim. This country is screwed three ways from Sunday. The only thing left is to put our heads between our legs and kiss our fat butts goodbye. Pessimistic yes, but I have lost all faith.

I can only hope your god does fix things. I'm getting tired of hearing the bickering over how best to address the issues.

The U.S. will definitely experience a relative decline (meaning the disparity of power between the U.S. and the rest of the world is going to shrink, and is already doing so). But the U.S. has too many strengths to really collapse into a failed state. Europe and Japan are going to face much longer-term problems than the U.S. will, economically and demographically.

Completely agree. If the country doesn't fundamentally change, then a fix isn't going to magically fix itself, and that seems less and less likely every day.

The system is broken. Obama is still the best option (doesn't mean its a great option). The political fighting is tearing the country apart.

Dim. Very dim.

No one paid attention to all the executive orders given under other presidents I've noticed. Obama signs one and people act like democracy has face faulted.

America and capitalism in general have become corrupted with corporate greed. Cures for many diseases have been completely ignored because of the billions of dollars the Pharmaceutical industry would lose. Politicians that are bought to promote the interests of corporations, like Obama and Romney who despite what they say never actually do what they promise and flip flop around on issues. The entire government is corrupted, the middle class is slowly being destroyed. At this rate if the United States doesn't make some huge changes, the America as you know it today will probably no longer exist within the next twenty or fifty years.

Oh no, I was paying attention to Bush's executive power grab. Obama said he'd end the practice, so that has some people upset. Of course, it doesn't help the two parties can't agree on what color the sky is.

I think America will be just fine if we can achieve term limits on Congress (both houses) and campaign finance reform. Term limits would remove the incumbent advantage, reduce the power of lobbyists, and goes a long way to eliminating seniority as a determining factor on a Congress member's importance. Campaign finance reform would make candidates more interested in courting voters and finding out what's important to the people in their districts. I think both would go a long way to getting ordinary citizens back into making the laws of the land.

Of course, all of this presumes the average American can be bothered to turn off the abhorrent reality shows being run all the time and actually pay attention to what is going on. Maybe I should just embrace that Idiocracy is the inevitable end and invest in Carl's Jr. "Brawndo! It's got electrolytes! It's what plants crave!"

It's 50/50 for me right now. It's these old, religious baby boomers that are screwing up everything now. Once they die off, we should be better off. Hopefully.

Dim. With the way government spends we are headed for a financial meltdown. You can't keep piling on debt and expect things will be fine. Eventually you will pay the consequences.

I'm waiting for you to tell us this is some sort of joke. Working at McDonald's or any place of employment where minimum wage is the norm is essentially paid slavery; you make just enough to feed yourself and rent but nothing beyond that.

Everyone talks about spending but never the amount of unfair laws and legislation that pass that don't make sense or cause more problems than solutions.

While I believe this country can work it's way back up, as Ciciero once said, "the more laws, the less justice." Even if spending is under control, we need to do something about our justice system.

I think that there is an unhealthy fixation on people who deviate from social norms. There are many relatively normal people who work hard every day to make the United States a great place to be. I think greed and excessiveness are the biggest problems the country will need to deal with. And for the record, I'm Canadian.

Dim.

Like the God Bless America guy said, this is the "oh no you didn't say that!" generation, where a shocking comment has more weight than the truth. Just try and say something not "politically correct" and watch the whole forum jump at you.

People reason with their tongues more than with their brains. And our culture promotes completely wrong values. It's starting to bite us in the ass now, I don't even want to imagine how it's going to be in the future.
