Is Avril Lavigne Punk Rock?

Me and my friend were arguing this the other day and we almost came to blows (ok, not really). He said she's not, but to me she fits the description of a punk rocker. She dresses punk, her music has some anti-establishment themes to it, she skates, and has said many times she hates being classified as pop, so even if you don't like it, she's punk. She may not be as hardcore as black flag, but she's punk nonetheless.

I am sorry but i think that examples of punk bands are the Sex Pistols and The Clash. To me Avril Lavigne is a little pop girl who desperately wants the credibility of being a Punk act but will ultimately never attain the level of popularity of the true great Punk acts.

Lets compare the apparent "punkness of Avril Lavigne to lets say a fork and a cat.

First the fork:

A fork stays the same, it sticks to its roots. A fork doesnt give a crap whether you use it to eat with or shove it up your bum. A fork just is, and always will be a fork, therefore it is more punk than Avril.

Cats dont desire attention, they can wander off for days and appear randomly and greet you with a scratch and a little crap. Cats are more punk than Avril.

Avril sings the song girlfriend, automatic lose.

So acording to the fork comparison Punk is supposed to always and forever be the same...well than Punk fails at every possible level of being and from today on I will not even think of it as music since I believe in something called progress. rzepak
