Is cannibalism ever morally permissable?

In english, we were filling out an opinion packet because we were going to have some class debates. Well, when the question "Is cannibalism ever morally permissable?" came up, i was suprised. I was the only one who awnsered yes. Im just trying to get some intelligent opinions on this. Oh and yes, im back.

I think I'll go with yes, I mean, if you are starving, and the person is going to die, and they say to you that if they die, they want something good to come out of it, (saving you) and say that they want you to eat them. then yes.

some ppl eat placentas for "cultural" reasons. i think it'd be permissible if you and a friend were starving out in the desert or something and you made a pact that the guy who dies first would want the living guy to eat him for sustenance. I don't think id do it thou

I know there are still a few cultures that still eat the dead for other reasons, but... ick is all I can say.

Yeah it is. Aside from stories like the Donner Party and that rugby team that crashed in the Andes, you can find examples in maritime stories of survivors of shipwrecks crews having to survive by eating the dead as well. If its a matter of survival and the person in question is already dead, I don't see a real moral problem with it. ProudLarry

If you are stranded and starving with a group of people and one dies you should eat them (if it's consenual lol). If I was stranded with like one or two other people and one of them/they died I would not eat them. I would just feel so bad.

What about that story which came out a while back about the man who advertised for a 'victim' and somebody actually came back to him and accepted?

Do you think that should be allowed - they've got the person's consent, after all... though would they have to wait for that person to die naturally, or kill them off?

There generally is a concensus on the reason whycannibalism would be permissable. That is because of survival. There have many instances of such things.

-The Uruguyan rugby team that ate those who deceased in the plane crash. They later admitted that human flesh had a good 'sweet' taste to it (movie based on this, ALIVE)

-Soldiers who fled on a raft fromthe Bay of Pigs incident, ate those who died while they were lost at sea.

An instance where it was considered immoral but still permissable:

-Two adults and a child were stranded on an islandafter their ship had sunk. After several days, the two adults killed the child and ate him. A fewdays later, they were rescued. They were not charged with murder and the actions were deemed to have been caused by survival instincts. The three persons were not related in any way.

People generally would disagree in the morality of this issue, but there are things to consider. Even though many say they would never do it, you cant be so sure when your body goes into survival mode (your body wants to live) and you must what is necessary to survive.
