Is "Deep Purple" really an underrated rock band in America?

In Europe Deep Purple have always been one of the biggest and most beloved and appreciated classic rock bands and they enjoyed the equal popularity as Led Zeppelin, while in the USA they have never had a mass popularity and they have never achieved a legendary status.

Why? They are a band who have a huge impact on hard rock and heavy metal music.

Yes. Very underrated. People are mostly aware of "Smoke on the Water", but just the hard rock superfans really know them beyond that. I only got into them because happened upon Machine Head for $0.50 at a Goodwill store when I was a teenager.

Not sure why this is. Maybe someone older than me can give more insight.

Maybe if more of their music got attention on the radio, and not just "Smoke on the water" which isn't even a very good song in my opinion.

Well, no band is as popular in the U.S. as Zeppelin. Remember when John Lennon said the Beatles were bigger than Jesus and people started burning their albums? That's the kind of fanaticism Zep inspires. Do not speak ill of Zep, it is blasphemy (and this is coming from a Zep fan). So compared to Zeppelin, every band is underrated.

As for Deep Purple, all I can really say is that most people aren't familiar with them outside of Machine Head. It's not as bad as these other guys are making it seem, with only Smoke getting recognized, songs like Highway Star and Space Truckin have gotten decent radio play in the past (though this style of music overall seems to be on the decline right now). Basically, if you're into that type of music you've probably heard more than Smoke. If you just listen to stations that play hits you've only ever heard Smoke.

Yes, they don't seem to be as popular as Black Sabbath or Led Zeppelin.

Back in the day, those bands were considered as heavy metal rather than classic rock.

I listened to them for a bit and then lost interest as my tastes shifted more to the classic rock I'm used to hearing now (eg Jackson Browne, Thorogood, Petty, Stones, etc) and alternative rock.

The major underrated band is Jethro Tull.........it's absolutely a crime they aren't in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame especially considering the crappy bands that are in and the ones that aren't even Rock or rock and roll! I'm sure Ian Anderson doesn't care much about it, but it's a glaring omission.

Aqualung and Thick as a Brick albums alone should have assured that, but they had lots of other great stuff as well.

I saw Deep Purple in the 90's, they were excellent live as expected, and played all their classics. Still, I always liked Tull, Sabbath and Zep much better. All 3 of those bands have much more personality to their music than Deep Purple, although Jon Lord, Ritchie Blackmore et all are quite talented.

No they aren't. However, in general that style music is left to "classic" stations but by no means was Deep Purple ever under rated.
