I was wondering if any African-Americans like Eminem because he's a rapper and white.
This topic is locked from further discussion.
This topic is not going to end well. People in general like Eminem, people of all races around the world like the guy.GrandJuryI understand that. Where i'm coming from is since there are TONS of black rappers and not so many white rappers like Eminem would that mean that you should like him just because he's white?

Seems you have not gotten many serious answers here (OK, not any) so I will answer.
At first, there was some hating going on by the black media and rap listeners. I actually frequented a hip hop spot when Em was first hitting the scene and remember them passing out a cd single for him. It was probably 6 months to a year before he officially dropped. Most people did not pay him any attention (although I admit the mix of the song was not that good yet).
But when he blew up, many felt the typical "they trying to steal or stuff again" and "he's not that special. He just gets all the press cause he's white". I actually used to defend him, even if I never bought him, and say that his flow was better than most rappers at the time. Then there was that incident where that old Em song surfaced where he said some bad things about a black woman (that he used to date) that were taken as racist. This did not help, of course.
Eventually though, I think he came to be accepted or at least tolerated. It's worth mentioning though that as many rap fans as I know, only one actually bought Em's stuff. I think most think he just talks about doing drugs and hating his mother, both of which are not popular with most black listeners. Also, most "black" radio stations don't really play his stuff, which doesn't help much. Someone here said "a better question is do whites like him". I am pretty sure that 90% of his fanbase is white. Of course, 75% of ALL rap is bought by whites.
[QUOTE="xaos"]Maybe the next time all black people get together to decide how they collectively feel about things, you can ask!clayronHow do you know about the secret black folk convention?! >_> There be a spy among us. I know because I'm an octoroon :P

Welcome!
Doesn't matter if you are pale. Did you get the black "magic stick"? Thats all you need. ;)
Kidding.
Yes people from India and Mexico like him.The real question should be - is Eminem liked by the Caucasian community.

Why would they not like him?[QUOTE="Netherscourge"]Yes people from India and Mexico like him. What does that have to do with whether Russians, Turks and Armenians like him?The real question should be - is Eminem liked by the Caucasian community.

Look at his album sales and you should have your answer.Y2Jfan23^ QFT, there is the fact he is often considered high on best rappers of all time too.
I don't have any issues with him. I'm not a fan of his music, but he's trying to make a living doing what he does and he's done that quite well plus there are a lot of people who like his music so its a win-win.
He and tupac are the only two rappers I like. Most of the black people I know will say that Eminem is one of the top 5 rappers alive.

I am pretty sure that 90% of his fanbase is white. Of course, 75% of ALL rap is bought by whites.Yeah, that's most likely the most important thing to note here Eminem gets by fine with black people, he's well respected in Detroit and the East Coast and these days rappers want to be on his side. Just look at 50 Cent, Royce Da 5'9", Crooked I, Joell Ortiz, all those people. They all wanna get on Shady Records. Eminem is doing fine by Black People, they aren't excluding him at all and he's very well revered in the Hip Hop industry. He basically took Hip Hop along with some other huge albums from the 90's to the 00's and he'll always be known for that. He's also one of the best lyricists in the game, his wordplay is insane and he has everything going for him at the moment. He is unstoppable.TBoogy
Yeah, I was wondering that too, because you know how black people all have the same opinions and they all like rap also. See, the additional pigment in their skin gives them all a psychic bond to each other which makes their opinions far more homogeneous than those of white people.
[QUOTE="gamefan67"]I dont have anything against him although I think people tend to overrate his abilities as an emcee.Toriko42In what way Eminem is a very good example of an artist who deserves his popularity To me it seems like he lost his wit and cleverness that he had early on in his career. I like the facts that most of his lyrics are raw, but none of them are really thought-provoking in my opinion. He has his moments but eh. I cant really explain how I want to atm:(

Relapse as an album from a lyrical standpoint was actually on point, it was strong, but the production and sound didn't back it up on a few tracks and that hurt it.

Toriko42I have not even had a chance to fully listen to Relapse.....I might actually give it a go when. I did hear that it was a pretty decent album. Yeah it was quite good I thought He didn't hold much back at all, this is Shady back in full form. None of that encore crap. My favorites off the album: Insane3AMWe Made YouMedicine BallOld Times SakeDeja VuBeautifulUnderground Those are pretty good. Except for "Insane" and "3 a.m", dont really like those songs that much:?
