Eminem has undoubtedly been one of the leading rappers of the past decade , with a wide array of controversial lyrics, intensified beats and critical acclaim.

Eminem has always encompassed a wide range of themes in his music, from politics to his own compelling and often empathic approach to life, love, family, and a sharp, dangerous sense of humor that has the capacity to both gravely offend and hysterically amuse.

Easily has the best flow/voice of any rapper, his voice is the perfect compliment to his intelligent beats and well-thought metaphors and puns, the flow of words is unmatched by any artists of this decade.

Thirdly, Eminem is not bound by any jurisdiction, he takes **** from no producer, artist, or critic, he is the most authentic lyrical assassin in every sense of the word.

When I usually bring this up, someone (usually african american) brings up some random rapper to be the best and claims that Eminem is too "mainstream" to be the best, and I reply, "Bro, have you listened to his stuff?"

Yay or nay? And if no, who is better as an overall artist?

I think he's pretty good. I can't really peg anyone as the greatest of all time.

No, Eminem is pretty average at best. Also last two decades? His first album was less than 15 years ago and he didn't even become mainstream until 10 years ago.

He's one of the better rappers because in an age where a lot of rap is nothing but auto-tune and bragging about their conquests and everything they own, Eminem's lyrics are actually about stuff. :P

But greatest is too subjective.

The past two decades? The first time I heard of Eminem was when Dr. Dre's The Chronic 2001 came out at the very end of 1999... so basically the year 2000.

That is about 1 decade.

I like him, but I don't think he's close to "the greatest rapper". I doubt I'd even put Recovery in my top 20 hip-hop releases this year.

There's rappers out there more technically skilled than he is. I'm not saying they're better, but perhaps you should listen to more rap music.

And like Nas famously said, "There is no best." It comes down to preference.

I would argue 99+ with the release of the Slim Shady LP, before that he was mostly underground.

Coming from someone who doesn't listen to rap all that often, I have to say Eminem really lures me in. His older stuff especially, and I mean older as in his album Infinite, its just really great stuff. You can tell that album was less polished or over-produced, I feel like Marshal is really rapping it from his heart and personal life. Plus Proof's on the album, his long gone best friend. I feel like the two had such a natural connection with eachother when it came to rapping.

Hell, I'll post this video for fun!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k-2kk6s1axk

Please link this someone, I still don't know how to do it on this forum. :(

His first big album was The Slim Shady LP, which was released in 1999. Now, I'm no mathematician, but that was roughly only 12 years ago.

2Pac had a good message sometimes, good content, and had plenty of good songs. But as far as lyrical ability, as in how he could rhyme and make words flow, he was "good" but there were plenty of rappers who were better. Listen to "Life's a B*tch" by Nas feat. AZ to see the difference.

i have pretty much all of his in-tact albums in mint condition, from 2pacalypse now to better dayz- all of the music on my itunes. it pops up regularly on my playlist in fact. his themes were from the heart, but as a rapper, i don't think he was all that great. my opinion though, no need to crucify me.

His death didn't hurt his popularity but he was huge even before that. Me Against the World and All Eyez on Me, for example, went multi-platinum even before his death. AEoM went 5x platinum in two months.
Plus Tupac is someone who never really fell off -- his final albums that were released while he was alive were the best that he made. It made a lot of people think "What if..." because he was someone who still had some great albums left in him.

Then you must admit he has a better discography than Eminem. ;]

2Pac never released a sub-par album while he was alive, whereas Eminem has released Encore, Recovery and Relapse. I love Em, he's my most played artist on Last.fm, but I've also heard enough hip-hop to recognize the talent of other individuals. It's stupid to call one rapper the greatest of all-time.

Yeah, nobody is ever going to agree on who the best rapper of all time is. One of my favorite rappers of all time is Master P. I bet everybody here is gonna be like WTF? Another one of my favorites is Soulja Slim. And I used to (and still do) like the Hot Boyz.

All that old No Limit / Cash Money Records stuff.. I grew up on that.. I love it.

One of the greatest rappers of all time. He's on the same level as Jay-Z and Nas right now, for crying out loud. Kanye is a better artist, but his rhyming skills are not even top 10.

But he's good.

And 95% of rappers are terrible.
