Greatest? In what sense?
English is one of the most, if not the most used language on Earth. However just because it is the most used doesn't mean it is the greatest. There are quite a few words and phrases that other languages have but English does not, and other languages have words that give more detail. And don't get me started about there, their and they're ... whose bright idea was that?

That's what makes it so expressive and extensible =D It's already such a ****ing mess that adding a few thousand neologisms each year can't make it noticeably worseNo, it's pretty much the worst language ever created. It's a Germanic language but has extensive Latin and Greek influences and is one huge Frankenstein-ish mess.
GabuEx
No its the most confusing language to learn. Foreigners have an incredibly hard time learning it, so no it's not that great at all

English has very large limitations. There isn't even a proper term for the indication of you-plural (as in I has we, he/she has they, you doesn't have anything except the grammatically incorrect 'yous')

Any language in which prepending an "s" to a word completely changes the pronunciation cannot be the greatest language. :P
And don't get me started on the ridiculously cobbled-together pluralization rules...

No, its French.
Five years of French leads me to disagree.
Seven years from grade 1-7 lead to me to agree with you. French isn't even on the same level as English. I was just being dumb. It does sound wonderful, though. Was wondering why this was locked myself.
One things for sure Arabic and Persian are the best when it comes to poetrysosodatIf you like Arabic poetry, check out Khalil Jibran's work.

define great. I think it's a relatively effective language, it serves our purposes well and allows for a plethora of thought that would otherwise be unable to be expressed, I think it should be America's official language and I think it has some advantages over cruder languages, but to call call something great requires that you measure it in one manner or another, generally to a frame of reference. Compared to spanish, Italian, French or Latin I can't say for certain that great would be the precise word, but logical might fit the bill.

Easiest? Really? :?
On what grounds?
Maybe it's the easiest to get immersed in, and, since the rules are so loose and easy to ignore, the least strict?[QUOTE="GabuEx"][QUOTE="GazaAli"]The greatest? NO. The easiest? Yes.xaos

yea absolutely. Tho I like to follow it properly, don't like to sound like a Chinese immigrant.Eh... even though I'm only fluent in English, I've studied enough of some other languages to recognize how hard it can be to absolutely clear about getting a point across. It's great in that it has been influenced by many other languages, but I wish there was a way to be more concise with it... so I can't really consider it the greatest.
[QUOTE="Deihjan"]English is a boring language compared to so many more exotic ones.. I bet TC is an American who doesn't know a second language.IzzieWaru
Oh hey, this is original: referring to an American as an egotistical, uncultured isolationist.

Nope, just tired of generalizations.
Generalizations do suck, but it's usually people who don't know a thing about other languages that automatically say theirs is the best, so I think she has a point. Though, it can and should be applied to more than just Americans. Then if you're so tired of generalizations, you should tell your fellow americans to try learning other languages ;) Personally, I'm tired of english speaking people acting all superior over their abilities when speaking their mothertongue, and I'm doing my best to speak my second language.Nope, just tired of generalizations.
IzzieWaru
Edit: call me butthurt, but I'm too used to people telling me I'm bad at English. I just think people should try and broaden their perspective before saying "This is the greatest in the world"
