I've heard that many French people speak English.

I meant the official language.

No, because you have to live with French people.

I SEE WHAT YOU DID THERE
get it it's funny because i actually made it an intelligent joke rather than having some guy narrowing his eyes like that lame picture with fry that is overused
Good to see Australia in second. We did weather the GFC extremely well, the largest problem was media sensationalisation and not economic. However I don't know why we rated so well in infrastructure, our road and rail is ****
daqua_99
I don't know, generally any person you ask will probably say that the roads in their country are ****. Maybe everyone is exaggerating.
Just curious, what does "forcing people to contribute financially to other's health insurance" have to do with quality of living?Engrish_MajorI'm assuming you have an even greater stance on the current healthcare debate in the US, but I personally have no problem contributing financially for other peoples insurance because I care about people who mentally or physically in any way shape or form are having problems to support themselves the way others may. I'm sure after a couple pro-capitalism books anyone can be in it for themselves but I think maybe France has the right idea, and they sure are enjoying it.

True but I remember going to Canada and seeing their motorways being like 7+ lanes each way, whilst our major one from south-west Sydney is 3 lanes each way. Also around where I live they are moving ~200,000 people and they are adding 2 extra train stations and an extra on-ramp to the existing 3-lane highway to get into the city ...Why so much hate for France? It seems people are just throwing out stereotypes and twisted truths. But anyways, I wouldn't know if it has the highest quality of life, but I must admit it has to be in the best. All these vacation days have to be good for something :P.
Another surprising aspect is how bad the US did on the freedom category. IL based this category off this survey. http://www.freedomhouse.org/template.cfm?page=445espoac
This isn't remotely surprising to me. As much as America wants to believe it is the land of the free, social conservatism has made it anything but the leader in freedom. It obviously isn't the worst, but I can think of a few countries that are better at it.
I hope Australia wasn't high on THAT list though. What with rampant censorship.
I vote the US of A. USA! USA! USA!
Seriously though, I love the US... its a beautiful country... and when the IRS comes a lookin for me, its off to Canada.

Australia is 2nd.
In civil rights and social freedoms? There were two lists there. Australia was 2nd on the quality of life list. I couldn't even find the list in the second link, only that it was for freedoms.

The U.S. is 7th and the U.K. is 25th (behind (lol spain) and Portugal! :? )

Do you have a goddamn problem with this
I find it surprising because the U.K. is usuaully percieved as wealthier than these two countries. However in this case, I suppose wealth does not correlate with quality of life. Its more due to the society i think (i'm British)I love France. It's such a relaxing place to be. Even their roads are so much more relaxing. UK motorways are like driving on broken glass.cjeklol that's so true! once you exit the big tunnel that connect the Uk and France, you immediately notice the difference.
I think I can see why France is number 1. Sure they have immigration problems like all the European country (Italy recently), but it's still a fantastic place to live ( I stayed in France 6 months personally). Unlike the peoples in this thread, I have only good words for the french people, they are alway happy to help you, but they have differents manner that can be interpreted as rude (exactly like the romanian).
Isn't it only good when you're already a citizen? I hear immigrants have a much harder time finding a job or a good place to live than it would be in the US.
