Gaol is proper english spelling, Jail is american englishWhicker89
Thanks for making me feel really dumb!
GAOL....would be better then the streets if there were no other inmates. That is the real killer when it comes to prison, the inmates. If I went to jail (a 160 pound white boy) I would be treated like crap and probably beat up/raped or what not. Prison could be a walk in the park for others but me personally it wouldn't be that much fun.
Yes I spent 30 in lock up. Not real prison but county lock up. That wasn't fun and prison where they send people who serve more then 6 months is a lot worse.
Gaols in the US are jokes.
Dunno about the UK. I think the prison system should be more like China. Where they make you sleep on a wood pallet.
That way no one would ever want to go to jail.
In the U.S you have comfy tempur pedic beds with A/C and Heating as well as Cable TV, newspapers, etc.

Have you ever been to a US prison? It doesn't matter how cushy is it! The inmates will destroy you and cause you much pain.

With respect to your question it differs to a great degree, you've got the celebrity prison facilities (country clubs with metal bars) and you've got ADMAX in Colorado.Gaol is used more often than Prison here, infact I barely ever hear it referred to as prison. I wont bend to your wishes got that sah[QUOTE="Whicker89"]Gaol is proper english spelling, Jail is american englishAidenfury19

How is he being a stuck up prick by using his own language and then explaining what Gaol is...?
As for me, I've never been to jail but My brother has been in the drunk tank countless times :P

I believe the phrase "proper english spelling" and the subsequent dismissal of American English supports my claim that he was acting stuck up.

Didnt your ancestors reject English spelling when you seperated from them? So what you want me to say your version is proper and not theirs?Didnt your ancestors reject English spelling when you seperated from them? So what you want me to say your version is proper and not theirs?

I want you to understand that you are on an American website and use our language, or at the very least not attempt to put British English in a position of primacy over it.
There is no "proper english" just like there is no "proper spanish" there are national dialects and regional dialects within that.

Same language different dialects, you owe your language as much to the Germans as we owe ours to you. Also thanks for ignoring the rest of that post.

I made a post on the topic with respect to your rather arrogant dismissal of American English on a website where most people speak that and simultaneously answered your question.
You then chose to make some misguided post about how we "rejected English" and I responded, it needless to say went slightly downhill from there. If you care to use colour instead of color or theatre instead of theater I really don't care, but don't use bobby when you know perfectly well the American English alternatives, it makes things go much more smoothly here. Especially don't show the kind of contempt that people elsewhere often accuse those in the US of.
Now if we can get back to the topic at hand that would be great.

What you fail to see is, you are now just like your original post, trying to force me to post how you want me to. Bobby is english slang, gaol is not slang. Also right now you are the poster boy of the "kind of contempt that people elsewhere often accuse those in the US of." Now can you stop trolling? What you fail to see is, you are now just like your original post, trying to force me to post how you want me to. Bobby is english slang, gaol is not slang. Can we get back on topic maybe, like I have been more or less asking for this last page?
OT, the only place where you can have a lengthy discussion on religion, politics, the loneliest number, what you would do if somebody grabbed your butt and be asked if you are stalking someone and accused of trolling by a British man who seems to believe only British English is "proper english spelling" all in the course of a day.
I'm freaking going to sleep.
Using the word gaol is some obscure forum oneupmanship. It's not in common usage anywhere. If you're going to use the word, stop using contractions, add a superfluous e onto almost everything you say and start assigning gender to nouns.
They're also no longer in common usage. But you want to seem intellectually superior using linguistics, right?

I did that once...when I was six years old...and I learned the word antidisastablishmenttarianism.
Holy crap, I spelled that right on my first try.
EDIT: Nope...I failed...
antidisestablishmentarianism
When people in the UK spell it 'jail' it makes me sad :(I live in the UK and have never ever heard or seen it spelt Gaol. have you just said that to look clever because someone already pointed it out? I think so.

Do you say color or colour? Defence or defense?
Regardless of whether you did not know about the spelling of gaol, it is the British spelling, and is used in many commonwealth countries too.
In answer to you question, I have seen the word gaol before this thread, it is not my fault that you are ignorant of it.

The exam paper I had in January had the word gaol in it. So does the Harry Potter books (UK version obviously), if I remember correctly. Of course I have seen it elsewhere, but those are specific examples.
Jail is in the Oxford English Dictionary, THE dictionary to end all dictionaries. Gaol is also in the Oxford English Dictionary...in fact, if you go onto their online website and type gaol in to their search engine, it brings up jail. In case you don't believe me.Wren28
Many Americanisms have been adopted into the English language. It doesn't make the English versions of words any less valid.
