what happens if i took a bar of gold in to buy a packet of crisps.Gold like most things has a monetary value. You can trade gold for money, just like you trade your old washing machine for money. Neither would be accepted as currency down the local supermarket.

You would probably given the store if the bar is big enough.

Isn't Gold money as much as Titanium is; Metal that's worth a lot of money

I believe that you are thinking of platinum, something even more precious than gold and rhodium is even more precious than all the others.

If you wanna know why catalytic converters are a hot commodity and are being stolen, 3 of the above metals are in them and it isn't gold or silver.
I'm not too clever in 'metal knowledge' but I'm aware there are higher quality metals than Gold, I was just sayin; Gold's a metal that's worth somethin, so is [random example of another metal] :)

It's all good. Titanium is an expensive metal too, but needs to be treated carefully as chromium based metals can cause corrosion in a normally corrosive resistant material. Thus tools or dies (such as used to create coins) need to be made of other metals that will not cause problems with it.
Honestly, I am not a metallurgist either, I just inspect metal stuff, usually carbon or stainless steel items, but have inspected titanium vessels in the past at a chemical plant. My knowledge of catalytic converters comes from being a mechanic at one time.
Our currency was once based on gold but is now based mainly on our belief it's worth something.

The thing is, there's about 50sq.ft. of gold on the entire planet (last I checked), whereas we can print as many colorful pieces of paper as we like.
What do you do if you have a gold standard when there's deflation though?[QUOTE="carrot-cake"]
