If it's competitive and takes talent then it's a sport.

Some people feel only popular team sports like baseball and football are "sports". I think anything that requires you to be athletic is a sport. So I'd say golf is a sport.

As for the list, in this order

Yes

No

No

No

Out of those, gymnastics and swimming is a sport because you have to be in good shape to do those. Gymnastics is more a subjective judging sport but those gymnast are in tip top shape.

Try walking 18 holes in the morning on a hilly course in the middle of August when it's over 100 degrees outside by noon without a cart. Then, go back and do it all over again in the afternoon while shooting close to even par. Again, without a cart and carrying your bag. Then, come back and tell me it's not a sport.

It's competitive, takes physical skill and is very, very difficult. It's quite obviously a sport. No real room for interpretation there.

Even though I agree that it's a sport, that's a poor line of reasoning to follow. "Walking with a heavy bag when it's hot" is nothing compared to the conditioning that say football players have to go through.

Golf is definitely a sport. It's not as strenuous as soccer or football but it's still a sport. Gymnastics - yes Chess - no Poker - no Competitive Video Games - no Swimming - yes But even though some things aren't sports doesn't mean they don't require a great deal of skill.

Yes it is. Along with swimming and gymnastics. "A sport is commonly defined as an organized, competitive, and skillful physical activity requiring commitment and fair play. It is governed by a set of rules or customs. In a sport the key factors are the physical capabilities and skills of the competitor when determining the outcome (winning or losing)."

I treat it as a game. Me and friends go to the golf course and chase each other on golf cars and run over other people's golf balls. I love it. :D

There is a huge difference b/w skill and athletic ability

Askilllis something you can acquire/refine over time
-yes, natural ability helps...it can make acquiring said skill easier and make it happen faster
-but skills are still something that can be aquired by most people

Athletic Ability is something that comes (for the most part) naturally
-now you need to have the proper muscle development to make sure your natural athletic ability (or lack there of) comes out
-but it still more genetic than environmental

An easier way to explain it is this;
If I practiced Golf everyday from the time I was 10 till now, I could play on the PGA tour...I could acquire that skill
-I may not ever be the number one player in the world...but I could still make the tour...Golf (for the most part) is an acquired skill
BUT
If I practiced everyday for the same period of time, there is no way I could make the NBA
-yes, it still requires a great deal of skill (shooting)...but it still requires a lot more athletic ability to play on that level

Also state if the following are sports

Golf

No...90% acquired skill

Nascar

No...same as above

Gymanastics

Yes...maybe the MOST dependent on genetics and natural ability

Chess

No...50% skill and 50% IQ...0% athletic ability

Poker

No..same as chess

Competive Video Games

No...70% skill, 20% IQ, and 10% ability(move fingers quickly enough)

Swimming

Yes...70% ability 30% skill
(I could NEVER make the Olympics no matter how much I practiced)

And I would consider bowling a sport. For school I broke things down for a presentation on defining sports. I broke things down into categories: team/spectator sports, measurable athletic competitions, judged athletic competitions and other/misc. This way, things like figure skating are considered sports, but not on the same comparable level as, say, hockey.

Golfers get tired?

Sure, when it's hot, your walking several miles (I think my local course is just under 4 miles total, about average) with a huge bag on your back up and down hills. Add the fact it's so damn frustrating for 99% of us and sometimes I'd rather just mow the yard than go play golf.

Yes, for the same reason why motorsports is a sport (that sounded redundant). Both take skill and physical preparation in order to be mastered. As for the others you listed:

Gymnastics - Yes
Chess - No
Poker - No
Competive Video Games - No
Swimming - Yes

It's not a matter of opinion, if something is a sport by the definition of sport then it's a sport.
