If I were to be buying a hat, is gray or brown easier to match? Also, are there any particular pieces of clothing the color of your hat is supposed to complement? Are you supposed to match it with your gloves, shoes, pants or what?

generally grey is the color that stays back and lets the other color show themselves off.definitely the color you could always use when confused .

Well my belt are shoes are brown, but my pants are either black or gray (no brown pants), shirts are white/black/gray (no brown shirts either).

I would say gray. If you wear brown, it means you can't wear black.

I can make both work, which is why I can't decide on which to get.

Gray is easier to match but also says to the world, "I'm wishy-washy, come take advantage of my indecisiveness."

Grey is easier to match. I'd go with that.

This is how I feel. Gray seems to be a softer tone that tones down bright colors, and complements dark colors. Brown is casual.

I think grey would be easier to match. Brown would be ok too, but somehow having it paired with something green might make people tease you about robin hood or something. :P

It depends what you're matching it with, and what your wardrobe consists of. Mine is full of black, some gray, and a lot of brights, so I'd go with a gray hat for myself. If yours is full of browns, then go with a brown. Accessories are not supposed to match a single part of your wardrobe (pants/shirt/shoes), you're more looking to match items in the same color family.

Actually I don't have any brown CLOTHES at all. The only brown things I have are my belt and my shoes (which isn't really brown). I'm going with Gray. :)
