In other words, do you think people often times like something unique simply because it's unique?

I definitely think so, but I wonder what you guys think. I think it is WAY too rampant on this forum. But again, just my opinion.

It's not cool to be anti-culture. Nor is it uncool.

It definitely is way too rampant on this forum. A lot of people are attention ******, though.

Either way, though, I think people take it a bit too far sometimes.

It's only cool to be counter-culture if the person doing it is cool

Yes, but there is no counterculture anymore so it's a moot point.

I don't think so but I'm also not a kid anymore. Back in middle and high school it was though.

Not per se, but it does create an appeal to like something that is not cherished by many. It feels special and more personal.

Do you think there are a lot of middle and high schoolers on this forum then? Or even people who are immature in that way like middle and high schoolers? :P

Quite a few people like to try to go against the grain simply to be persecuted or thought of as 'weird,' and some people certainly do try to be weird merely for the sake of being weird, but overall I wouldn't say that it's 'cool.' I think it's something we all see in junior high, high school, and even college.

You're saying that is essentially 'nothing', right? Because the vague statement was very vague. At least for me anyway. :P I DO believe that some people legitimately adhere and enjoy things only if they are relatively unknown... And I also believe that it happens way too often on this forum.

I know there are a lot of kids here that age. It doesn't necessarily make them immature though.

Than I stand my case. But I definitely think even some of the older crowds like to be 'unique' a bit too much...

Oh there's no doubt about that. GS OT is not an accurate representation of the general population and probably couldn't be much further off. I'm not saying that's a bad thing though...

Oh, my point was simply that I think if you're being counter-culture simply to be counter-culture, that's not cool. If you're being counter-culture because you like what you're doing (e.g. listening to music not many people like because you like the music and not because people don't listen to it) then I've got no problem with that.

Definitely. I like to think of myself as 'in the middle' in terms of being counter culture from the spectrum of the general culture not being counter culture and the OT culture being VERY counter culture. It just bothers me when people like to dislike things simply so they can seem more 'enlightened' then everyone else.

Well, you aren't really "separated" from the culture, you're more just "antagonizing" what is already there. If you really thought for yourself, you wouldn't care whether one person or one million people liked the thing you liked. The number of people would be irrelevant. It's a different kind of conformity, but it's still conformity.

Yes, it's probable that people will like something just for the sake of how unique it is. GS OT being rampant in counter cultural sentiment though? Doubt it.

Nope. Being contrarian just to be contrary is stupid.

Is it cool? Well that depends on if you consider "cool" to be what is liked by the majority, in which case it isn't. However, it's entirely possible that people join counter-culture movements because in certain groups it is what is favored by most of the group's members.

What's that song? You can be nonconformist too, if you look just like me.

Nah. It's just a bunch of angst. As trying to be cool.... They're only cool in their own minds.
