If the metal you refer to is thrash metal then it's not dead, as a matter of fact it's coming back with really great bands

warbringer

Evile

Warpath (probably the best new thrash band ever)

Bonded by Blood

Municiple Waste (leader of the thrash revival, imo)

Lich King

Gama Bomb

For me if there is no rock or metal, there is nothing. Except alternative, which I could live with all by itself.

Mainstream radio rock is becoming a thing of the past as the internet takes over.

There is always new talent to appreciate, you just have to know where to look for it, and sometimes, that is the hard part.

Rock and roll is far from dead. I think it's still the most popular genre of music actually. It's evolved somewhat, but a lot of what I hear on the radio is rock.

The answer is yes. If the Beatles And Zeppelin were new all of a sudden, they would still be incredible. Why do both bands still have so many fans today if their music doesn't still sound great by todays standards?

In terms of popularity in the U.S. metal is dead with the exception of some Nu Metal and Metalcore bands (ew I know). That's not to say there aren't plenty of genuine metalheads in the U.S., it's just much more of an underground thing now. Supposedly metal is actually pretty big in areas of Europe though.

Not really. Harvey Milk released a very successful album in 2008. So did Meshuggah, Opeth, hell even the Guns N' Roses album that took 15 years to come out was pretty damn good

Yes. My point is, why do people still love these bands if their music is no longer good by todays standards? I began listening to the Beatles about 6 years ago. More than 30 years after they split, and some of their songs were (and still are) the greatest I've ever heard. At that time I had no idea how old the music was, and was stunned when I found out that the band broke up in 1970.

That sounds like they'd be copying Led Zeppelin/The Beatles :P.

But, yeah, I'd probably really like a band that sounded similar.

It doesn't matter if their sound was new back then. They still have hordes of young fans NOW, when their sound is "old".

They still sound better and fresher than most bands on radio and tv right now, they definitely had talent. And of course a carbon copy of a 40 year old band wouldn't be considered unique, or talented, duh... :P

They wouldn't hate them, but they would regard them as definitely belonging to the lower tiers of music.

No. Mainstream rock maybe, but other forms of rock are alive and well.

[QUOTE="Benevolentbob"]

Dude, no. In fact, nu metal is dead. Metal is still going strong.

All you have to do is look at CD sales to see that Nu Metal is sadly not dead.

Well.. Metallica and AC/DC say otherwise. I think that metal is slowly being replaced by Heavy Metal and Screamo... but hopefull that'll never completely happen :|

Rock is alive and doing just as good as always if not better, you just have to look harder to find the best bands.
