Is it me, or has it gotten a lot harder to be modded?

I basically grew up on GS/OT and took breaks as I have gotten older. Anyway now that I am back, I have noticed myself getting modded a lot less. A couple days ago, I made a few posts here and in SW that I was sure would get me suspended, but nothing happened.

Because the slangs are auto-filtered now? idk

Let's just be happy that we don't get modded.

As long as you blindly spout liberal propaganda, you'll be fine.

General note on how to behave here these days is simple. Don't be a dick.

Where that line is when it comes to SW I won't comment on. I don't post there much... Or lurk there.

Maybe it has to do with the forums having less activity than it did a few years ago.

I don't know, I hardly see any moderators not active as much as they used to be but other then System Wars mods, not much anywhere else. In short, Gamespot isn't as much fun as it used to be.

It seemed like the recent changes were supposed to make the rules stricter. Perhaps just less active mods

I think it is because Horgen and his ilk are benevolent and kind overseers. Progressive and even handed. Paragons of humanity... (don't ban me).

They're desperate for traffic, I'd wager there is an unofficial "don't mod/ban/etc unless someone is offended" rule in action.

@mrbojangles25: The user Airshocker was prominent member for around a decade, regardless of fervent peer pressure the moderators didn't budge, this seems to cast doubt on that theory.

Would guess the front-page is the primary source of traffic, and the primary means of new members jumping aboard.. Compared to the the early days it's morphed into a collage of clickbait techniques clinging to whatever is popular in culture, gaming itself has arguably become secondary.

Yeah I've been noticing this; Eddy somehow managed to write a lengthy article about a <140 word tweet. That's almost magical, turning relatively nothing into a something so large; I'd be impressed if it wasn't annoying.

*What did he do to get banned? I imagine some things are zero tolerance still on here. But I know I've mentioned some things even in the past week that, historically, got me suspended for days.

In this day and age... That's the sure way to ban everyone, isn't it? :P

I think what a lot of internet forums suffer from is the much more personal social sites like Facebook. Whereas I in my teens could spend a couple of hours everyday on this site, these days teenagers spend their time on Facebook, twitter and instagram.

There is not. Any user who breaks the rules (new or old) can be striked and banned. Unfortunately what happens over time with some users is that they decide to leave the community, and instead of just leaving they act progressively worse and worse until we have to ban them (the old "I don't want to break up with girlfriend so I'll act like a jerk until she breaks up with me" strategy).

The word ilk pretty much negates all the positives that came after it but if you go around and sing our praises around the site, we may be persuaded to overlook it.

Yeah; Omni-slash, Xaos, Sajedene...it was pretty much after the Great April Fool's Day Massacre of 201_ that a bunch of people left; shortly after that the site revamp came and sort of sealed the fate of this place (at least the forums).

I still enjoy coming here, but yeah...not as good as it was.

@Mercenary848: yeah, you learned who had a sense of humor that day, and who took a video game site too serious lol.

It was a really good prank, went on for quite some time, too. I remember people were cursing and defending people and you could tell the mods wanted to keep the joke going, but also had to censor stuff. I think amnesty was granted for anyone that went on a curse-filled rant.

For better or worse, that is when the changes starting happening, both to the site and community.

I thought from the title it was about the modding community. Like if games are harder to mod. Fully explained that means if games are harder to make user modifications like new levels, new weapons, etc.

@mrbojangles25: Yep. "Watch now", "Everything you need to know" (spread over 30 separate articles), "Top X fluff in popular thing", "Check out this cool", "Largely irrelevant patch for popular title", "Developer of very popular game has said something".

It's nonsense. Charizard1650 is a better news source, no joke, and I'm kissing mod ass either, he's consistently posted relevant news faster than Gamespot (in cases Gamespot isn't posting it) without having to wade through crap.

Back in the day, if a guy made a thread : "I like Apples" and you said, "no, I prefer Bananas" you would get moderated for spamming...

Yeah shit was that bad back then.

GS didnt really change for the better. Instead of getting moderated and suspensions and losing points, now they just delete you post without telling you anything and censor everything.

They now operate in silence instead of like before. You can get banned just as easily tho. These forum are pretty dead tho, so not much happens and people arent as active or involve like before. A ton of people got banned, and a ton of people just left because the forums are just not the same.

@mrbojangles25: This was so long ago, but didnt you have the team fortress 2 heavy as your avatar? I remember when people acually had avis lol.

Yeah a lot of people overreacted, but it was a culmination of a lot of building tensions. People were a lot more passionate about GS, and the mods drove a lot of users up the wall haha. Good times!

i don't know about how strict the rules are now but talking about the forums being less active than before, i personally believe it's due to this simple fact that the previous generation who were into forums are now older and pretty much at the age that life begins to screw ppl. the current generation has chosen other forms of socializing which is mostly because of smart phones. back in 2005-06 which i personally believe was OT's prime there was no such a thing. even fb hadn't taken over yet.

Maybe. I was modded in the past for using the word "Coon" in reference to a person whose legal fucking name is Coon.

Apparently using someone's name is racist around here.

What about "coon cheese"? that's a famous brand of cheese in Australia and the name is from the town where its made.

I was suspended because I wrote that I don't buy music or something along those lines. Apparently because I didn't buy music it was assumed that I got music illegally. I didn't even say I acquired music. The staff member who suspended me never heard of Youtube or the radio I suppose. I complained in the Ask the Mods board, the old one, and there was no arguing with the staff member. One of the mods private messaged me and suggested I took it further but I just left it. I lost a whole level! It was pretty bad back then. But there were more users and it was fun having to be creative with our posts.

I used to get Modded purely because this moderator did not like me. It was insane because some of the stuff I'd post was meant to be funny and it was always flagged by one moderator. I used to think about getting myself Perma Banned like a few of the old greats, but I out grew this site and moved on. Its nice to see a few old faces that still post here though.
