I was thinking about learning how to play and wondering if getting a teacher is mandatory or not.

Of course, if you know what you're doing and practice.

Yeah definitely. I once met someone who never really had proper lessons, but was able to play by ear. I plan on teaching myself piano as well, if I get around to it.

yeah some people can do it, like Art Tatum, who was largely self taught, although the guy must have not been human to begin with.

It is possible, but having a (good)teacher helps a lot, and can help you avoid developing bad habits that will hinder your progress or even hurt yourself.

No, perfect practice makes perfect, mindless practice doesn't help much.

You can certainly become a good pianist without a teacher. You just have to be dedicated and you have to be willing to work hard and practice a lot. I taught myself how to play the piano when I was about 10 years old. I'm not great, but that's only because I don't practice nearly enough.

I will post a pianist (the user) like response. Of course it's possible to teach yourself piano and still play well. Though, if you start to learn and learn bad habits, you won't be making much progress. You of course don't know you're doing it wrong. It's good to have somebody who knows what they're doing teach you and correct your mistakes. Like lonely said, perfect practice makes perfect. Once you know the basics and know what you're doing, you won't need the teacher anymore. Having a teacher though is highly recommended and will make the process a lot faster.

Sure. I can play all of Master of Puppets and Battery, and I've never had anybody teach me.

Well I guess it could be possible, but it will take a long, long time.

If by "good" you mean for example being able to play some of Rachmaninovs preludes then it will take a really long time...or do you mean being able to play your favorite pop/rock songs on the piano? Cause thats usually easy bogus.
