Yeah, totally. I know someone who has syphilis from working at a hospital. Supposedly AIDS kills a lot of heroin addicts because of the needles. You can also get diseases specific to 'down there' sometimes by being exposed to the same surfaces as someone infected (such as swapping/stealing underwear).

Yes, it can just be skin contact when someone is having an outbreak, or it could be a dirty needle somewhere. You just have to make sure that who ever you're planning on getting it in with doesn't have any stds, or if they do, then they're not in an outbreak at that time.
I think it you need to have sex to have an STD, otherwise it wouldn't be called a SEXUAL Transmitted disease. AIDS and HIV are considered STDs because they are also transmitted by having sex but also by blood, so there are other diseases that are STDs and have another route of transmission.
