I wanted to paint over a few scrapes on the side, is it possible to make it look decent or should I just forget it?

No. Not unless you're willing to sand down the entire part of the car, use a primer on the metal, paint the part with multiple coats using the exact same color, and then clearcoating it....

Forget it. Unless you have time, money and more time, I don't recommend it at all. I've seen the results from the lack of time or good paint and it wasn't pretty.
