Why do you want to learn karate?? I thought you had more skills than Jin Kazama seeing how you beat up that Asian kidDarthkaiser
Yeah but I want em top notch. The best of the best. (if you.... know what I mean) and also am half asian myself.
plus that guy had no skill he just a fat dude who spent his life gaming.
Sure it's possible to teach yourself, but karate is useless in a real fight. So is taekwondo and the rest of that crap a bunch of white people teach at community centers now.XilePrincessYou should learn about the real Karate and real Taekwondo. They're good.
If you just want to do it for exercise, yeah of course you can. If you actually want to earn belts and fully learn everything, then no you can't.

Alright I think i'll in role my self on some, of thatTaekwondo. ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

It doesn't matter if you learn about the "real" anything. Like I said, community center programs are run by white people. I've only met one actual asian martial arts teacher, and he was only half asian. You're not learning anything "real" unless you're going to the country of origin, and OP isn't and he can't really teach himself anything "real" from the internet, so it's a moot point.

if you really want to be well prepared when people "mess" with you and really wannahave top notch skills, i suggest u forget about karate or anything similar and take Muay Thai. cus srsly if u wanna actually be prepared to fight someone andi think Muay Thai is the way to go.
Not hardly, that was not my intended point. I know many people of all races that are very good at martial arts, but none of them are really all that familiar with the original/'real' ways that it's done. If you're wanting to learn anything even close to useful, you don't learn it from people who set the program up and didn't learn from somebody who really knows what they're doing. The versions you will get at the YMCA or whatever your local organization is are watered down and utterly useless if you'd like to use them in a fight. They're for exercise, not for real self defense or fighting. Sure you might be able to hurt somebody with some of the moves or disable them so you can remove yourself from the situation, but you're not going to be all Jackie Chan from taking those kinds of classes. It's all rendered nearly completely useless by the fact that if it was giving kids the ability to break each other's necks and crap, parents would never enroll them in it. Anything the TC has access to will not make him the next "Karate Kid", or anything close to it.Skin color equates to martial arts skill to you?

High flying karate stuff is pretty useless in an actual fight. You'd be much better off learning boxing, which is also a good way to get in shape. You should see if thee's a boxing gym in your area.

I don't think so. Yeah, there are people who have lowered the standards for karate and taekwondo in order to gather students. However, I wasn't talking about community centers. I was talking about dojos. Who you learn the martial art from, not where it happens. That's what counts. About OP: Who knows, maybe will learn something useful.

thanks for the tip :D i'll be knocking everyone out on the first day wooooooooooo
Boxing or some other striking style, and jiu jitsu would be my recommendation.High flying karate stuff is pretty useless in an actual fight. You'd be much better off learning boxing, which is also a good way to get in shape. You should see if thee's a boxing gym in your area.

That is indeed what I think, learning about and actually being taught are two different things. Being taught any truly authentic martial art is quite difficult if you're not in a huge city, you'll very likely have trouble finding a good, authentic dojo.
I actually went to one because there was a tournament going on, just to see what was happening, and you could tell as soon as you walked in that the term "dojo" was used in the same way hotdogs use the term "all beef". It's basically just borderline false advertising to get you to think you're getting something better than you are.
It's not easy to find somebody who is truly talented in traditional (non-westernized) martial arts, you'll have to search for quite a while to find a good teacher if you want something that is anywhere close to useful, because most "dojos" and all community programs are pretty useless if you're serious about it.
And TC, I would definitely encourage you to try out boxing or kickboxing, much easier to learn on your own and much easier to find a teacher even in a smaller city.
If you are only want to learn a martial art to for fighting purposes, I wouldn't bother. Martial arts are nice to show off in controled situations, but in an actual fight they quickly become useless. I can't count the number of times I've seen some cocky guy with an orange or a yellow belt got his ass kicked by a regular guy because he was to busy trying to pull off fancy counter moves. Take up boxing or some MMA courses or something, they will be far more usefull.
Sure it's possible to teach yourself, but karate is useless in a real fight. So is taekwondo and the rest of that crap a bunch of white people teach at community centers now.XilePrincess^ This. I would even venture to say that MMA brawling is better than Karate or Tae Kwon Do. If you truly want to learn how to defend yourself, or be a lethal combatant, send me a PM.

You're right, there are places like that. I've been to a few. I've been to a good one. Yong In, in Franklin, TN and encountered Master Koh as he taught an acquaintance of mine Hapkido. He's from South Korea. He's an 8th degree black belt in Taekwondo. He knows what he is doing. Shi Yan Ming teaches in New York. He is a 34th generation shaolin warrior monk. I haven't met him, though. Yes, they are rare, but they do exist. It's worth the look if you can find them.Karate and Taekwondo are ok if you wanna stay in shape but unless you can find a proper dojo with an accomplished master and regular competition there then you are not going to have aany sorta advantage in a real fight.
I recommend you do Muay Thai and not boxing, Muay Thai will teach how to punch, kick, knee, elbow and be able to fight in a clinch, all the things you would need in a street fight.
it will also get you in shape and how to take a hit from some1 as you will be in a competive environment.
Sources/qualifications - 6 years of Muay Thai, 2 years of Karate, 2 years of Judo and Jui jitsu and i have fought in many fights both in and out of the ring
muay thai is a more feasible option. and better take the one that have the bone strengthening training, if some bully wants to kick your leg or something they having a hard time managing their pain...

I concur. Muay Thai is much more practical. Don't learna martial art out of a book. You'll need to spar. Like others have said, many martial arts classes don't provide any practical experience in fighting. Practicing forms only will not condition you for when uh...people take your "baby."
Sure it's possible to teach yourself, but karate is useless in a real fight. So is taekwondo and the rest of that crap a bunch of white people teach at community centers now.XilePrincessNot really. I know a mate who does TKD and knocked a guy out in a fight with a kick.
Sure it's possible to teach yourself, but karate is useless in a real fight. So is taekwondo and the rest of that crap a bunch of white people teach at community centers now.XilePrincessThat is not true. Why does their race matter anyway? My Sensei was taught by a Japanese man who worked him really hard, so in turn he does the same to us. I would definatly say Karate is not useless in a fight. Pardon my language, but that is complete BS.
As a former karate instructor in the long run no. You may "learn" the moves but you will have virtually no refinement of that move and unless your trained to see subtle mistakes you will be making alot of them.
It is helpful for a few techniques but trying to teach yourself karate is not a great idea in the long run
edit: Also ignore what Xile said theres tons of moves that actually win fights, not to mention krav maga is one of those types and thats probably as harsh on the opponent as you can get
