The iMac is basically a large laptop in term or internal parts. Personally if you want a low footprint on your desk don't plan to game all the time or trying to push the iMac with the top games in future years then yes and iMac will last. I have a brand new 27in iMac at work with 8GB of RAM and the ATI 5750 which should last me the next 5 years which is our companies life cycle.
It just got a refresh with the i5's and i7's last year so I doubt you will see any huge changes to the machine itself but usually Apple will do their refreshes in the Summer so you could always wait until then and see what happens.
They probably will, you are better of waiting a few monthsor is apple going to release a new imac 2 months from now with alot of new features etc does anyone know if this will happen?

I'd wait. The current model is quite old now. Also, don't listen to those advising you against a Mac. I've used OS X and Windows 7 and OS X wins in most areas.

I'm not saying Apple doesn't make quality computers or OS's, but the price/benefit ratio just isn't good -- too much value attached to brand name.
