Are they a waste? wouldnt you be better of learning to box and street fight? can you picture a guy busting out karate moves at the bar? are martial arts relevent to everyday brawls other than confidence boost?

Everyday brawls?

If you're getting in a fight every day I think maybe moving or learning to run fast might be a better option.

I agree.

Street fighting is throwing your arms around with force hoping you hit something. Martial arts are how to defeat your opponents quickly and efficiently.

martial arts is only for self defense and to teach you to not use violence in arguements and teaches you self respect and respect to others. boxing would only lead you into more trouble if get caught into a brawl ( youve been trained to hit weakspots and you could have restrained from doing it) and street fighting...well it isnt even an actual way of fighting. so no they arent a waste of time and i should know i did martial arts for 5 years and reached black belt, and ive learnt to take anger out in different ways

I think karate only works well in movies, in real life people won't even give you a chance to do your kung fu or karate combos.

Learning step-by-step patterns with random punches and kicks here and there? Yeah, it's a waste. MMA is probably your best bet. It's the most practical and it cherry-picks all the best moves. Kind of like a "Greatest Hits" version of martial arts.

If you expect everything to go down like it does in a kata, then you missed the point completely. If you know how to apply those moves and can read the situation to figure out how you're going to react, then you can fight even when ganged up on. It's why weapon training is important though-- if someone pulls out an equalizer, like a chair, you need to be able to deal with that or get a weapon of your own.

I don't know. In my limited very experience dudes seem to think that is off limits in all but criminal acts. I don't know if it is from watching movies or they think no dude would be that silly but they don't seem to expect it and most healthy folk still have enough leg to get a foot or knee in there fast enough to make it hard to defend. That is unless the dude is wearing a cup, but if he thought that far ahead you're likely in a lot of trouble anyway.

Yeah, but it takes SO MUCH training just to get good at all that. MMA is usually a much faster learning process and there's none of the formalities of the traditional martial arts, which appealed to me. It's just people trying to learn self-defense, no more, no less. No bowing, no board-breaking, no belts, just practical fighting skills.

martial arts might help you in a fight but it also might hinder the otherwise sensible decision of not getting into a fight in the first place. I don't really care now whether I looked like a chicken 20 odd years ago. Unfortunately I did then, and as such spend my life now with a crooked nose and dead front teeth.

The discipline and methods involved with martial arts do not only involve fighting in general but also involve mental work outs, patience, and the understanding as to why you don't need to use it to get into silly bar fights. If anything, learning different methods of fighting is the best. You get to learn different skills and applications to these skills.

Well when those trained in "this kung-fu stuff" have been taught all about pressure points and what hitting a specific part of the anatomy will do, then those high kicks could probably snap a few bones.

Just knowing karate or martials arts won't win a fight. As Saje mentioned it's everything else about the art that prepares the person mentally. Haven't you heard people always saying that sometimes a fight is already won because one person mentally psyched out the other. Now, if someone decides to act klike he's Bruce Lee or Jet Li before the fight starts then he or she deserves to get their butt handed to them.

Most karate and martial arts schools teach traditional fighting but also teach self-defense techniques which has less of the typical moves one sees in martial arts and more of what's needed to either stop an opponent on the street or give you time to run away. I'm talking about strikes to the groin, knees, instep, shins, throat, solar plexus and best of all to the eyes.

I take Krav Maga and I can tell you that it's pretty much a martial art that teaches me how to take down any opponent using whatever moves is necessary to do so even if it means fighting dirty.

No, they generally build stamina, muscle mass, and discipline. In an actual fight though, they aren't as useful. If you want someting that would help you in a real situation, laern Krav Maga.

A good kicker can easily break through a Karate or even Tae Kwan Do guard for that matter. I take kick boxing and spar with my friend who does Tae Kwon Do (Probably one of the better defense sports). He hates when I kick because he has no way to guard it. Heck, when I do leg blocks he limps away from the impact.

I'm not impressed. My friend is great at Tae Kwon Do and I break his guard effortlessly with an extended hook kick or a good pushing kick to throw him off balance and close in with a skip kick.

Is your feet like a foot wide? Or are your legs the size of tree trunks? Unless he's closing his legs like he's trying to hold his pee in. There is almost always more than enough room to thrust your foot into his nether regions.

I think people misunderstand what martial arts are meant for... also the prime virtue of any art is devotion to training and improving the techniques by studying other arts, otherwise I don't see a reason for you to take any art or sport.
In Russia it doesn't matter whether you know boxing or karate, if you're weak by nature(IOWno interest in the art/or don't train at all)you'll get beaten regardless how much studied it.
PS. Karate is way too promoted, hence why it hasmany fake masters that don't teach anything.
PPS. I wouldrecommend Kyokushinkaikan Karate if you're interested in karate...

If you saw the video it did not enphasized the guard. It was about an old dude taking on a football player and knocking him out in one kick. Can everyone do it. Noo!

I do Karate, and we learn self-defence moves for everyday situations as well as actual Karate. Trust me - if you're in a guard position and you can use some Karate on a guy who's just a brawler, you'll kick his arse.
