The movie will still be a financial success I'm sure. It seems like it has a lot of marketing behind it, plus Will Smith.

The Signs was his masterpiece. That is all. There will never be anything more as he hasn't produced anything close to it in 10 years.

M. Night Shyamalan's movies always seem promising, then something goes wrong... though I'm compelled to see them anyways. And I'll even watch them again when they're on TV. I can't defend them, but I'll watch them. They're mildly enjoyable. At this point it's interesting just to see where something promising can go wrong.

At least stateside, at any rate. Insiders are predicting for it to make just under 30 mil. Considering the bank a Will Smith movie used to pull in, it doesn't look good for him or the studio. I guess name recognition alone doesn't always mean a big opening.

I totally would have seen this movie on Thursday had it been in theaters in my area, many times instead of doing midnight showings in my area they just do 10pm Thursday showing instead... anyhow, it didn't have it, and now knowing it got such a bad review I probably won't bother to go see it until it hits up the $3 theater.

1) I haven't seen this movie. In fact, I haven't seen any of his movies since Signs, so I can't say how good or bad they are. But yeah...going by what I've been hearing about his movies, I don't expect him to ever make a good one again. 2) Shyamalan sucking is not a new thing. While it seems like Signs was really where people started hating the guy, he's done quite a few movies after that. By my count, After Earth will be the 5th post Signs movie that Shyamalan has directed. For a while, people have been asking the question "why does this guy still get to make movies"? And the answer is clear. His movies make money. Sure...Lady In The Water was a financial flop, and The Happening wasn't a lot better. But The Happening was probably hurt by its R rating. It's probably no coincidence that his follow-up movies were PG and PG-13. And Lady In the Water apparently lost money, but that's the exception. Even after The Happening, people hated the $hit out of The Last Airbender. But it still made over $300 million worldwide. Not that great considering a budget of $150 million, but not exactly a flop. And that's just box office results, and doesn't include DVD/Blu-Ray sales. In any case, the ads I've seen for After Earth aren't mentioning Shyamalan. So I guess that's a small hit to him, that the stuudios are no longer trying to sell Shyamalan movies on the Shyamalan name. But they still let him direct a Will Smith movie with a $130 million production budget. That only happens because this director is pretty good at making movies that actually make money. We can whine and complain all day about how his movies suck, but I think we all know that quality doesn't pay peoples' bills. This dude's movies make money, so good for him.

The sad thing is this movie isnt doing well because of name recognition. M. Night's negative name is more powerful than Will Smith's positive name. And to be honest, I'm just kind of bored and annoyed with Will Smith's blatant nepotism with his movie casting. Can his kids just get a role because they can act rather than their daddy is famous? please? just once?

Will Smith was crazy for letting M.Night direct After Earth. Ruined the movie and Will Smith/Jaden Smiths good name. M Night is a a fvcking disgrace and should be banned permanently from making movies in Hollywood. Even his beginning movies were pretty boring except few twists n turns, he was always a overated director.

This director duo should be booted out from Hollywood Uwe Boll and M.Night.

Got to agree with mrgeezer untill his films stop making money his careers not dead. IMO however the last good movie he made was unbreakable which failed because it was dark and not what people expected. Unfortunatley his career has been mostly gimmick. I partly blame the public. He probably could have been good but after the flopping of unbreakable he caved and became what the public wanted "the movie with a twist and a happy ending guy" and somewhere along the way lost access to what made him good in the first place.

When I saw the first trailer at the cinema I thought to myself that it was an interesting concept, and I had no idea that it was Shymalan's movie until the title of this thread.

I'm glad I didn't see it.

Kind of tragic, really (as far as cinema tragedies go anyways).

Started out really solid and is now getting closer and closer to the bottom of the barrel every time he directs a new movie. Kind of feel sorry for him.

I always thought the movie looked terrible. Im frankly sick of Will and his son, and I am a huge Will Smith fan. But, I thought the acting in the trailers was so bad. Will was constantly doing some weird robot accent, and Jaden is perpetually pouting.

I am sad to see Will Smith's new movie doing poorly.  He's gotta be the coolest dad ever playing in all these movies with his son.

InEMplease

Looks like the Smiths have pulled in only $27 million and opened at the #3 spot.  It's a huge blow to both Will and Sony.  They're hoping to make its money back when it opens overseas, but judging by how a lot of the reviews say the movie is boring, I think it's has an uphill battle ahead to meet expectations financially.

But as somebody else said, his movies always seem promising but fail in one way or another. A really good premise draws in the audience and the money is made but the execution of the plot sucks so the movie sucks. They have your money already, so the amount of money made is not always on par with how good the movie actually IS. [QUOTE="Hallenbeck77"] What's funny is that the studio didn't put his name ANYWHERE for the promotion of this movie.

It was just an example. I remember seeing trailers for many of his previous films and it always sounded like they were announcing something crazy awesome when saying his name.

Well MIB3 is a comedy in how laughably medicore it is. I'd say it's better than two at the very least but even that's not saying much for it.

I remember when his name was being used to sell a film. I didn't see his name in any ads I saw for this one so yea, his career is certainly heading in a bad direction albeit probably not dead just yet. This movie could still make some money regardless of critic reception.
