I generally prefer modern metal to classic. I suppose that one can make the point that there are considerably more horrid bands now than 20 years ago, but that's an inevitable symptom of genre expansion anyway.

Everything is getting worse in music if you ask me, not just metal.

I think Black Sabbath is the best metal band, so I have to say worse.

All of the best metal bands are modern Its gotten a lot better. And don't even try bringing up pop metalcore bands because hair metal is still the laughing stock of the music industry

That **** ain't metal

I personally think newer metal is better than the old stuff. Most of the stuff I listen to is from around 1988 to the present, so still a good 20 year span.

Mmm... I'd say that it's transitioning and leaving some people behind. I mean this ain't your dads metal anymore and I think many of the younger users (under 20) probably see that their father can't relate to the more extreme metal and sticks closely to stuff from the 80's and earlier.

I personally believe that the last 20 years (from now) have seen the release of the best metal out there. Of course, as someone said, metal is growing and with growth there comes an increase in the garbage as well but the good stuff is still there.

I'd say neither. On the one hand modern mainstream "metal" is mass-produced MTV-friendly rubbish, but the lesser known bands (re: not played on TV) are fantastic. I'm positive that there was a ton of rubbish released even when metal was "good".

It became horrible in the 90s and has since started getting better. Slightly.

I would also go with this. I can't stand most deathcore, though, but I still like some metalcore, but not as much as I used to. I think pop and rap/hip-hop is getting worse, imo.

Depends on the genre, I miss the classic metal bands like Judas Priest, but I do like the direction power metal and symphonic metal bands are taking.

it depends what you think metal is. If you thought hair "metal" was metal then your dumb! i thought the stuff I listened to in high school was metal (Limp Bizkit, Korn, Linkin Park) but compared to what I now listen to that is absolutely not metal! Just to hard to tell if metal is better or worse since there is so much of it but it's not really mainstream.

I couldn't tell you since I don't listen to new bands at all. The newest metal band I like is Slipknot, who came out some time in the 90s.

Not better than before, but there are a lot of great bands out there that are fairly new.

From it's conception (of a debatable year) to 1987, it just kept getting better. The three years after that it took a dip in quality, and then in 1990 things started looking bright again. Until '95, this trend continued, until once again dropping and reaching an all time low in 2000 or so. It got barely any better up to 2004, but it started taking off again since then, so for the last 6 years, I think metal's been making improvements.

Odd stance, but that's what I believe from my observations.

It's getting WAY better. There's obviously a ton of crap, but most of the great bands are really improving. Folk metal = the best thing to ever happen to music...

Generally, I prefer newer albums by bands that have been around for a while. Usually when the first album I hear is the band's latest, I like their older stuff less. So I'd say metal is getting better. Although there have been a few bands (near the top of my list) that had disappointing newer albums, compared to their older work - System of a Down, Static-X and Judas Priest come to mind.

Most notably I'd say is Metallica and In Flames. What a dive. :P

worse. because in the metal scene its ok to say "we should like -insert band here-" its ok to be immitators now. metal has been ruined by its stupid stupid fanbase that bases everything on "trueness" which has turned it into a medicore genre. The early bands didnt have the ridiculous scene metal has today, they never had the restrictions and thus they were more creative. We will never have other metal bands be as creative as death, iron maiden, morbid angel, emperor etc. Theres a few exceptions like lykathea aflame and such but in general, metal has become a gimmick.

Right because a music's fanbase affects its quality, that makes sense.

it does, music scenes say hello. Ever get involved in one? bottom line is, bands get pressured, fans who start bands often only care about the metal sound.

I don't really like 80's Metal or anything before that, and I love 90's and 00' Metal, so I'll have to say better, definitely better.

Newer metal hasn't produced any bands that are as good as Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Megadeth, etc. So it's gotten worse to me.
