Okay on my second to last day of school my english/lit teacher was flipping out that some girls in my class were cutting themselves. She said that she was so afraid and called three different people about it. And then she gave us this huge lecture about people commenting suicide and everyone to be nice to each other.

Do you think she is flipping out about this?

One tiny slip, there goes the vein, and instead of attention, the girls are getting DEAD.

No, self mutilation and self harm are VERY serious matters.

this is a HUGE deal. The teacher should be commended for taking the action she did instead of telling them to stop.

The teacher, and anyone with a sense of responsibility or guilt should have done the same thing.

it's sorta a big deal...I mean, if the teacher knows kids are doing dumb things to themselves, than that teacher has the responsibility to say something...plus cutting yourself is dumb as hell anyway...

Well tbh I think that making a big deal out of it just makes it worse.

My mum made a HUGE deal out of me doing that. Its not as if I was actually trying to kill myself :? im to much of a wimp to have made the cutsthat deep. I had this friend that does it oftenand although I really dont like her doing it incase she does kill herself I cant make her stop and I feel that if I gave her a great long lecture about it it wont really make any difference, I let her know that im there for her and that im worried for her and hope thats enough for her to see that she doen't have to cut herself.

Well you see the educational system is also supposed to make you better people (simply put) and yes the teacher can and should lecture you about this, plus she was absolutely right.

Now the fact that the girls didnt cut themselves DURING school time, is probably the reason suspensions werent given.

Now a teacher of course in that case cant help but feel like a parent of the children they teach. Thus her concern made you rteacher lecture those girls.

Why does that make it any better?

Why are you defending their behavior? It's not healthy, and the teacher was only looking out for them.

Self harm is one of those funny issues, I don't mean ha-ha funny.

See, it is often an indicator, and yes the teacher probably did take the right course of action. However, people will still self harm regardless, some people do have a genuine reason to do it, meaning some people genuinely are depressed and find that the only course of action is to cut themselves, to have something to override the emotional anguish they feel. Some people drink away their sorrows, some turn to drug addiction, others self harm.

It isn't a matter of "emo trend". I knew a boy who committed suicide at school. It affected people, and so in that respect I can fully see why the teacher did what she did. But at the same time, people won't just stop self harming, while it is a very dangerous thing, without that release more extreme action may be taken.

True, but someone else maybe able to provide some sort of release by just talking to them or letting them have someone to rant to or at least someone else can distract them from their problems.

Im sorry but self mutilation is self mutilation. Its not right and it signifies a problem that needs to be brought to attention. If anyone feels they need to harm themselves to feel better emotionaly, they need to seek help.

Yes they need help of some sort but what that help is varies from person to person and bringing it to a calss's attention isn't always the best way to deal with it

That is true, last time I used to have a friend that cut herself during math class in 7th grade and teacher did not do anything, but in English class, there was a different girl that cutted herself then the teacher asked her that she wants to have a little private conversation with her of why she is doing it, she did not get in big trouble though.

Exactly, and it can also bring a stigma and encourage bullying toward said person. Which could make the problem worse.

No it's good to adress it to the whole class even if they are not the ones doing it currently. In tenth grade I was chatting with 2 friends and they just started talking about cutting and showing scars it was random as hell cos I always thought they were pretty happy girls but I think it was a thing just to fit in with other girls. Soon ALOT of girls in our grade started doing it (after that day I tried it once cos they said "it makes us feel happy"...well it didn't make me feel great and I wasn't even sad in the first place:lol: .It was stupid as hell I kinda avoided them for a while didn't want to be dragged down with them you know but many people did it for the long term I guess to be a part of something.

So in short, no, she didn't flip out she did the right thing :P

TC your lucky that you have a teacher that actually gives a **** about the students and their lives. There are lots of teachers that are there to teach you and thats it. They just want their paycheck. These students were ****ing cutting themselves. Thats a serious thing. Like someone said before all it takes is a cut on the vein and your screwed.

QFT. That said, "cutting" is a difficult subject to broach mostly due to its often being a pathetic cry for attention. That said, others who engage in it really do suffer from legit, dangerous psychological issues.

Veins have valves that open and close causing the blood to move; it isn't really a serious issue to cut them. But arteries don't, and blood is pumped through with every heartbeat. You can cut a vein without it being too serious, but not an artery.

The valves only prevent the flow from going backwards and they're opened by there simply being a higher pressure behind them than infront. If the vessal was opened there would only be atmospheric preasure on the valve which is nowhere near enough to keep the valve close. Simply put the valves mean nothing in this circumstance.

But the blood in veins still isn't forced through every time the heart beats; unlike in arteries.

How is the teacher "flipping out"? I think she's right for saying something. People who cut themselves are pretty ******* stupid to begin with, at least someone is trying to help.
