I had just finished watching the 100 greatest discoveries in science series on the Discovery Science channel.

The first place goes to Charles Darwin with Natural Selection

The second and third place consecutively go to Einstein with General Relativity in second and E=MC^2 in the third position.

The fourth is The Periodic Table of Elements by Medelev.

What gives me a headache is why no Electromagnetism in top 10?

On topic, do you agree with the first choice?

Speak your mind.

Why are they even trying to "rank" scientific discoveries? Isn't the entirety of science intertwined, and thus isn't the interaction between all of its constituent fields and their discoveries responsible for giving us our current mix of technological capabilities?

Two thoughts on this:

1. Scientific discoveries build on each other, so I don't see how you can rate one as greater than another.

2. The periodic table of the elements wasn't even a discovery; it was an invention, unless they're referring to the discovery that atoms with the same number of valence electrons exhibit similar behaviors.

Those stuffs are technological innovations.

Well, the discovery of how to make fire is not exactly scientific.

The discovery of what fire is and what causes fire are scientific discoveries.

F=ma was probably the greatest scientific discovery. That simple little equation is essentially the foundation of all of the natural sciences.

I'm going to go with Copernicus' discovery that the planets revolve around the sun, not Earth. Why was this important? One man upset the thinking of an entire society. The simple fact that this Truth was greater than perception, humbled us and made us think twice about our assumptions about our world. It pissed the people in charge off and loosened the dogmatic choke-hold that religion and ignorance fostered. It paved the way for the scientific method being the paramount tool to learn about our world and how it works.

Notable discoveries; penacillin, the cells of a cork plant, natural selection and, of course, E=MC2.

Seems more of an observation than a discovery to me...but w/e -there are still things I would rank ahead of that (using oil for fuel, electricity, internet, viruses, dna...our lives could still be relatively the same w/out 'natural selection'...but not w/out the others I named + many more I did not)

No... that'll end up being the cure for cancer or AIDS. Natural selection was a ground-breaking discovery... but honestly, the creation of the theory of evolution is far greater in terms of achievement.

From what you listed, I would say cancer. AIDS is (almost) entirely preventable and is not the 'killer' we once thought it to be (thanks to some advances in medicine and practices). Cancer, on the other hand...

I wouldn't call natural selection a "discovery". Scientific breakthrough maybe but not really a "discovery". But I don't make the rules. General relativity is a discovery, gravity was a discovery, no so much natural selection....

I guess it's a discovery in science so I suppose.
