This is a reply to a post that was locked in the PS3 forums.Someone was not buying GTA4 because it says not to steal in the 10 commandments or something like that. They were worried that they wouldn't get into heaven if they played the game. Anyway below is my little rant about my view on religion and why I don't think you are breaking and commandments if you play this game.
I ask religious people to prove to me that god exists, and you know what they tell me?
I know god exists! When I'm down, I can call to him and he will cheer me up, when I am desperate he will give a helping hand, when I am sad he makes me happy, and when I'm lonely he provides me company ect... That is proof that god exists, I tell you!
Ok now we have little Jimmy and he has an imaginary friend called Fred. When little jimmy is down, Fred cheers him up. When jimmy is in despair, Fred will give a helping hand. When jimmy is sad, Fred makes him happy, and when jimmy is lonely Fred provide him with some entertaining company.
Anyone notice any parallels?
Jimmy's mom notices this, and books and appointment with a psychiatrist so see what the problem is. The psychiatrist looks over jimmy and diagnoses him. He tells Jimmy's mom that her son is delusional, and should grow out of this phase at some point. If little jimmy keeps this imaginary friend up for too long it could cause him problems and give him a deluded view on the world.
Anyway my question is, who is the delusional one here? Or, are they both? what makes believing in god any different then believing in an imaginary friend that provides you with the same comfort andhappiness? Why is one thought to be acceptable and the other a problem?
I'm 25 right not and I've never been brought up on religion, and I think I'm too old now to start making imaginary friends.
Now going back to GTA4.You are not stealing if you buy the game, and are stealing within the game. You are having fun, and you should be having guilt free fun knowing you bought the game to play as videogame (aka its not real life). You know it's not real, and you know you're not doing a bad thing, so you're really not breaking and commandment. Some of you guys are taking religious stuff to literally, and I think it may be getting to your heads
