Is singing just something you're born good at or is it something you can learn to do?

It's both, but it's better if you have the talent for it.

I think it's probably a bit of both. Some people are born with singing voices, others can be taught and the rest have no hope at all.

Something you're born with. It may take some learning, but you can either sing or you can't. You have to have the pipes.

I'd say it's a talent when you're born with it, but it's a skill when you have to learn how to do it.

I think it's more of a talent. I've never really been good at singing, and I've never gotten better.

It's a bit of both. But this day and age, it seems more of a skill than anything.

So it's mainly talent with a little skill involved...That sucks I guess. I want to be a singer/songwriter for a band, and I can write good songs, but I just can't really sing.

Well you can keep on writing and do you really sound that bad? Or just need more practice? Plus, nowadays you dont even need to be a good singer anymore to be popular just turn on the radio for some examples.

I guess I don't sound THAT bad, but I definitely don't sound good either. I never have been a good singer. I want to take lessons though and maybe become better. And yes, not many people can actually sing good these days, but if I'm going to sing I want to sound as best I can.

I'd call it a talent. It takes some skill and a lot of studying to do it seriously, but in the end, all the study in the world won't get you very far if you just weren't born with a singing voice.

There's a lot of both. With a lot of work you can really improve your voice. But if you have the right genes you can sound great with very little training. I won't deny the possibility of early developmental influences too - but that's just a hunch.

It's a skill. Talent helps, though. Talent alone won't get you performances.

Its lucky genetics :/ without being born with a good voice, no matter how much you work at the skill you will never be good. In this respect I think singing is the lowest ranking musical instrument, simply because you can be born with a wonderful voice but not work at it so much, yet be good. To even get to a good level at an instrument takes much work, of course some pick it up quicker than others but still work is put in.

Skill implies that it can be strengthened through practice alone... Talent, while innate, still requires training to fully cultivate No matter how much some people practice, they will still suck at singing (case in point: me) It is most assuredly a talent

Yeah, it is both. Some people train their voice, some people don't need to.

Massively weighted towards talent. Everyone can improve with vocal coaching (to some degree, at least), but if you aren't born with it then you'll never have an amazing voice.

In the loose sense of the words, perhaps, but otherwise not true. A talent is defined as an innate ability and a skill is defined as an ability acquired by training. Definitely not the same thing.
