I require a 'medically necessary' surgery that costs anywhere from $4,000 to $15,000 in the US, which would be covered by insurance if I had any. Are these kinds of surgeries free or really cheap in EU countries, because I think it'll be cheaper to fly there and get it done if that's the case (I'm a citizen of both US and EU)

I'm not sure about the rest of Europe but here in the UK we have the NHS so it would be free.

We pay taxes for it though. So technically it's not.

I know costa rica has free healthcare even for tourist...it might be closer, but are you planning to pay ANYTHING? I mean even if its free it still costs money so you can always pay (even a ridiculous amount of money) to help the health system here.

This will explain the conditions for free treatment in the UK, I don't know about other EU countries.

After reading it briefly, I don't think you'll qualify here.

I'm pretty sure you'd have to be a citizen to get free surgery in most countries.

Flying and moving out to Europe is going to be more than the surgery. Just the flight to europe is thousands.

That's how it goes when government picks up the tab.....though if a tourist needed an emergency operation it wouldn't be right to not provide it. And then if that were the case...your tourism would disappear because who would visit a country where they were refused medical treatment? You do get the tourism dollars don't you? I think they paid for care if needed.....

There are some countries that have high "Medical Tourism" but if you are going for a important procedure I would do a whole load of research, In many places its you get what you pay for and if its free then they may not take the best care of you. The likes of the NHS here in the U.K is abysmal in many places up and down the country, no wonder i'm afraid of hospitals.

the guys just pay any hotel and then go to a hospital, as long as they carry ID they cannot be refused treatment.even if its not and emergency, that is why is so damn popular. thats why I hate movies like john q, all that guy needed to do was buying a 2 tickets to costa rica which would roughly be 700 dollars (he gathered like 2k in the movie) and due to some UN thing they have to treat a kid who is danger.

UK has the NHS to take care of it directly, Germany have an insurance based systems however insurance is mandatory and the government taxes the low risk to subsidise the high rick, Switzerland is insurance based but the state provides insurance to those who can't afford it, France is an odd mix of private and public health facilities... not sure about other nations but i think generally the Nordic nations also have an NHS type setup

Indeed. And I would be pretty pissed off at the idea of people coming over and scrounging of our healthcare.

Not everyone visiting your country is going to get medical treatment. A healthy tourism is going to make money for the count. And part of the way the estimate cost is doctor fees....which would be paid even if they didn't work on a tourist. So I think that is a high estimate. I have to step out or I'd check out your tourism.:P

I was talking about medical tourism. anyway you know our pension fund is currently bankrupted because of all the inmigrants who come to get treated? and the citizens who dont pay. costa rica is expected to run out of pension funds by 2030 or something if it doesnt improve soon

I'm sure Costa Rica has got great medical care but not every country that provides free medical care to Tourists will, many so called "Developed" countries have poor medical track records.

Depends on what kind of surgery. And you can't be a citizen of ALL of europe :P In Denmark, if the surgery is life saving its free, be it a transplant or a kidney stone removal. If you want it done faster than what the waiting list can offer you, it'll cost ya. How much depends on the private practice. If it was an operation that was mostly cosmetical, like sex change or getting your breasts enhanced, it would cost you.

I just can't imagine being put on a list to get treatment. Is there no urgent care? Like what if you break a leg? Or what if you have an ear infection?

You're exaggerating it in your mind. There are private hospitals and health insurance just like there is anywhere else. The NHS is not forced upon you, you're free to spend your money on a private doctor. If you think you'll be placed on a waiting list with a broken leg i can only shake my head...

All life saving treatment is given no matter the payment. The poor are given care with payment by the government. Those that don't have insurance will be billed. Though it sounds expensive....as long as someone is paying something toward the bill.....the can't be forced to pay more. Some of those people don't have the money for the insurance I suppose....but a great many do, they choose not to have insurance. I'd like to see the cost come down....and a program for those considered uninsurable. But I don't want the government involved in healthcare. There are ways to make it affordable.

I require a 'medically necessary' surgery that costs anywhere from $4,000 to $15,000 in the US, which would be covered by insurance if I had any. Are these kinds of surgeries free or really cheap in EU countries, because I think it'll be cheaper to fly there and get it done if that's the case (I'm a citizen of both US and EU)

istuffedsunny

It's the same in EU. You'll get a "free" operation if you have a medical insurance in one of the EU's countries.
