I have noticed a pattern in my dealings with people. Those that use the most profanity usually aren't the brightest crayons in the box. I have come to believe that frequent use of profanity is a sign of the inability to make your point through reason, IN MOST CASES. Now I am not saying that there is any kind of scientific proof for this. But it is undeniably the case in most circumstances. Thoughts?

Though that might be possible for some cases, the over-use of profanity doesn't mean one is of low intelligence.

Uhh, no. It's usually a habit. When people vent their anger it feels good, so they keep doing it. Then it becomes a habit.

I had professors in college who sweared a lot. Although, I was a music major. The correct term to describe a jazz guy with chops as I learned is the word "mother ******." For instance, "That cat could play like a mother ******"

I never think outside the box, just outside the isoceles triangle.

But to the actual topic matter, I think there might be with certain people, but for the majority I don't think so. A person can curse their ass off and still make a valid point, while another could do the same and make no sense whatsoever.

If anything it's been my experience that the people who curse more often are also more intelligent. For example, I've yet to meet a professor at my university who doesn't curse nonchalantly. Hell, in my research lab everyone curses like sailors.

On the other hand, the only people who I've run across who get offended when someone curses have all held rather unprestigious jobs.

Nope, I love practicing my right to free speech. :D. Around family and women I'm a gentleman; but when I'm with friends or people I don't know and we're discussing something, I think it's just a way to express your anger and compassion for x-issue/topic.

It's a petty insult from the PC police to say you're any less intelligent because you use profanity...

I use profanity all the time, but I only use certain words. Damn, Crap, Hell, Sh*t, and goddamn pretty much make up everything I say. I use some more than others. Maybe I am the exception or something, because everyone tells me I am a smart guy. I think the overuse of the word f*ck pretty much means you are an idiot, though.

Wow, your cursing is pretty tame compared to mine. I'd give an example of the stuff I'd say, but even if I censored out all the curses I'd still probably get moderated. Suffice it to say that I take blasphemy to a level that would make even that demon-possessed little girl at the beginning of The Exorcist cringe.

I doubt the use of profanity has a direct relationship with intelligence though there might be some indirect relationships that make it true.

I don't think it means somebody is unintelligent, unless they can't think of anything to say or prove otherwise. In which case, there's no point anyway; it's just a bunch of swears. But it has it's place, I guess.

I see the point you are trying to make, but I do not believe one causes the other. It might be that those who have enough self-discipline to study hard also have enough self-discipline to speak without profanity - one not causing the other but having something that unites them.

It's a sign of low intelligence when people rely on it, not when they use it. Profanity certainly has its uses, especially in expressing passion. If you try to rely on eloquent speech for passion more often than not you do not accurately convey that passion, you come off sounding technical. Besides, how intelligent is it to judge intelligence based simply on the use of words that societyassigns a certain stigma to?

I still say that the opposite is true. For a person to even want to restrain themselves from cursing they have to first be offended by it. And it's been my experience and observation that there is a strong inverse correlation between intelligence/education level and how easily offended you are.

It might be possible to make such a claim, but I think there are so many things effecting what is going on that it's hard to say. There could be so many contributing factors that it is hard to say especially with an absolute claim.

Or maybe those who are of a higher education level are less likely to have moral absolutes due to the liberalism of many education institutions. I'm not sure if it's possible for any of us to make a claim to there being any type of correlation without a formal study being done.

I certainly do. I'm by no means of low intelligence, by both my own account and those wonderful things called SATs. Hell, I even threw in a few curse words on the written portion of those.

I had an instructor in school who cursed more in every sentence than some do in an entire week, yet he was one of the most intelligent people I've ever met. Cursing is more an expression than a sign of intelligence. Just because you curse doesn't mean you're mad about something, just means you know how to.

I'm not at all easily offended but i don't use profanity. For one I have morals that go against it. I also have the ability to express myself and make my point without it. I suppose morals are another outside factor influencing profanity use. HOWEVER, there is still a correlation.
