I mean they do want power and to control the government. What do you guys think? Is the Illuminati behind the 2012 conspiracy theory?

The whole thing about 12/21/2012 was just started by some people who decided that since the Mayan calendar ended on that date that the Mayans predicted the world would end then. This is roughly akin to believing that since our calendar ended on December 31, 2012, we predicted that the world would end then. Then once that date had been established, every single armchair doomsday prophet suddenly decided that their pet theory on how the world would end would come to fruition on that date.
