I've always thought of him as a jester, probably because I hate mimes and clowns, and don't mind jesters, couldn't have my favorite villain of all time being something I hate, now could I?
hes most likely a jest, in the older batman movies the joker had a cane and true jesters often owned canes, plus they were meant to entertain the king. And the joker is an entertainer.. kinda
