So it seems like victory is nigh. Afterall the rebels have taken Tripoli and Kaddafi's gone into hiding (whether he's hiding in a spider hole near his hometown or heading for a new mansion in Pakistan only time will tell).
But is the war really almost over? Is it going well. Well I'll tell you what I overheard from a conversation of two army captains stationed near the border.
Captain #1: We've struck a bit of luck at last. Got something Washington wants.
Captain #2: Washington wants it, eh. What is d'you think. What's the danger in a thing like that?
C1: Don't know till we've had a look
C2: So they haven't told you what to expect? They don't tell us all they know, do they? Not by half. But they can make mistakes, even the Top Ones can.
C1:'They may, but they've got eyes and ears everywhere; some among my lot, as like as not. But there's no doubt about it, they're troubled about something. TheSpec Opsdown below are, by your account; and Washington is too. Something nearly slipped
C2: Nearly, you say
C1: All right, we'll talk about that later.
A few minutes later
C2: But the war's on now and when that's over things may be easier.
C1: It's going well they say
C2: They would. We'll see. But don't count on it. I'm not easy in my mind. Like I said the big bosses, even the biggest can make mistakes. Something nearly slipped, something has slipped! And we've got to look out! When we're you ordered out?
C1: About an hour ago. I got a message that said that spies were feared by the border.
C2: Bad Business. Our border patrols were uneasy two days ago, that I know. But my patrol wasn't ordered out for another day, nor any message sent toWashington either: owing to the Earthquake and the fall of Tripoli, and all that. And then they couldn't getWashington to pay attention for a good while, I'm told.'
C1: The President was busy elsewhere. Big things going on in the northeast they say.
C2: I daresay. But in the meantimeenemies have gotten past the border!A nd what were you up to? You're supposed to keep watch, aren't you, special orders or no? What are you for?'
C1: That's enough don't try to teach me my job!
