There's no such thing as a racist word, what makes something racist is the context you use it in ;).

Doesn't "negro" mean black in Spanish?

Oh, and no, I don't think calling someone "Negro" is any more racist than calling someone black.

Not that the word "negro" is racist, it's just attached to what the racists and such of previous generations called them. So it's still somewhat offensive.

A word itself is incapable of being racist/offensive/etc. The context is what defines the word the intent defines the word. If you say the word with mal-intent then yes it is racist if not then it isn't

Its just dated. I much rather be called black.

Being called negro would be like being called colored. Wouldn't be racist, it would just feel weird.

No, I think it's about as dated as, "Thou" though. Of course it's newer, but dated none the less.

it's no more racist than calling white people crackers. anyway we have freedom of speach so don't try to ban either N word and make it illegal to say it, now if you use it to harass people that is a different story.

yeh i have to agree

i hate people using the word coloured for describing black people because as you know white is also a colour so that would make white people coloured aswell

It depends on the context.

There are words that almost can't be used without racist connotations, but I agree that context and intent are the essential determinants.

Yeah? Then what is it?

Negro is the spanish word for black. Back in Puerto Rico I had 3 different friends whom nicknames were "negro". I don't think any word is racist, not even the big N word. It all matters on the context you use it.

It probably is now because it doesn't sound "politically correct". Be careful.

When words like this come to light, context and tone in which the term is used is important.

It's certainly not the best word to use to refer to a black person.

It's not racist, but it wouldn't necessarily be smart to use that word, cuz there is a good chance someone out there would be offended. If you think it's worth being *****ed at for useing the word negro over African-American is up to you.

Yes the word negro is the black word for spanish and maybe portuguese. Now if you think is racist,it could be depending what you use after that word.If you only say it friendly is ok but is you say something like "you s** ** * negro" well thats racist. But if you only tell negro, well I don't think so cause if people start to tell "hey blanco" which is the white word in spanish,I don't white people will be intimidated or something like that.

It's not racist, in fact it's hardly used in common language. People always say black.

By the way, consider that the premier black American scholarship fund is the United Negro College Fund. As Dan Quayle said, "What a waste it is to lose one's mind"
