Is this a myth or is it real?

Is there really a chemical they put in public pools to detect urine?

I had one of those frozen ice drinks at burger king once. You know, they are like snow cones, except its a beverage, pretty much just blueberry flavored syrup and crushed ice. Anyway it turned my **** blue, I kid you not.

I misread the thread title and thought it said "Is there really a chemical that turns your piss colors?"

I retract my previous post.

I think it's just something parents tell their young children so that they avoid peeing in a pool. I'm not a hundred percent though.

wanna know a good prank, first get some type of non-toxic dye (there's 100's of different types, some work better than others.)

then put it into your friends bathing suit (pretty much only works for guys, but hey people on OT don't know to many women).  Then when the dye starts to react everybody will think he peed in the pool.

also most lifeguards pee in the pool so... yea

In every day applications, there is not one.

However there are sensors for the various components of Urine, namely Urea, Ammonia (the chemically reduced version of Urea), and other various proteins and electrolytes.

Most of these chemicals are either very expensive or insufficient to detect urine in such dilutions of multiple thousands of gallons to the point that it turns the pool red. Also for such a high concentration to turn the water red, you'd probably make the pool too toxic to swim in it in the first place.

So in theory and reality there are ways to do it, but in practical applications there is no such thing that is commonly used.
