I've been looking at cars for a while now and really want a sports car. The RX8 seems to be just about the cheapest one I've found. Why is that is there something wrong with them?

Official from dealer- 2006, 20,000 miles $15,000- Autotrader

Now are most cars from craigslist something really wrong with them or scams or what? There is some really cheap ones

2006-46K miles, $12,000

2004, $12,000

Im not gonna get a new car unless its a sports car (or close to it maybe like audi), with manual. I've looked at just about everything except american sports cars cause none of them really appeal to me besides the Focus ST and thats really expensive.

Old WRXs, Lancer EVOs, Mazdaspeed 6, mazdaspeed 3s.......to get one under 20,000 it has to have like over 100,000 miles and I'm not gonna do that.

Any advice on a nice sports car for under 20,000 is appreciated.

Private sellers usually cheaper than the dealer,I'd get the one with less miles but the black one looks better

Maybe because they are 2 door and not practical anymore with gas prices rising up? Just my guess.

Oh yeah I remember now. I think for that car you have to change oil often or something like that.

They consume high amounts of petrol and oil (expected from a rotary engine).

Certain RX-8 models has also been known from suffering engine failure.

Those can be hard to find though as they didn't sell well. Also since they haven't been made in years, parts will likely be pricey.

RX-8 pros-

-Lightweight

-Good handling

-Really a 4-door

-Nice sporty interior of decent quality

-Engine Revs to the moon and sounds good

-Pretty quick if you get the manual transmission (the ones with the auto trans make about 40 less horsepower)

RX-8 Cons-

-Terrible gas mileage for the power output

-Engine makes very little torque

-Rotary engine consumes lots of oil and won't last as long as a well-maintained piston engine

-It will never be as cool as an RX-7 :P

-Slower than many competing sports cars

-Small backseat

If I were you, I'd be looking for a 2007-08 Nissan 350z coupe.  You won't have a backseat at all, but you will have a very nice, good-performing sports car that will walk away from an RX-8 with ease.  The 03-06 models are nice, but the 07-08 is the one to get if you can.  They have a different hood and front fascia to differentiate them from the earlier models.

If you get a Z over an RX-8, you get-

-A lot more horsepower and torque

-Better gas mileage

-Engine that has been proven to last

-True 2-seater status (if that's worth anything to you).

-With the manual transmission, one of the best stock tranny/shifter combos on the market.  Very smooth, positive, solid, and capable of handling abuse.

-Engine still revs to heaven (7500 rpm in the 07-08, just like the 370z).

This is my former car, and the 2nd 350z that I owned.  I can't say enough good things about them.  It was great for driving around town, and it was great on long road trips too.  I now have a new Focus ST, in case you were wondering.  Much more practical and better gas mileage.

Its a Mazda is part of the problem, not exactly a high end brand. People don't understand just how high Maintenance a rotary engine is they will literally fall apart if not taken care of, unlike say a honda engine that will still run for a while even if the owner is a idiot. If you don't know about cars don't buy an RX-8, I honestly would have to buy a Rotary engine car new just to make sure its taken care of. Overall the RX-8 just isn't pratical for the normal consumer low power output for the gas milelage of an American Muscle car. You could get some serious power out of it if you dive into the Aftermarket scene though.

Honestly with your budget I'd look at pre-08 Jetta GLI's or GOLF GTI's Audi TT's Honda Prelude (last year was 02), Scion tC and Honda s2000's

If you wanna haul serious ass on a Budget and not forgo reliability Volkswagens the way to go in my opinion. Though I'm pretty biased towards German cars.

It really isn't that great of a car. Plus they stopped producing the RX8 in 2011 which means prices on the car is dropping at the moment since it isn't in high demand.

There is nothing wrong with an RX8.  I have been wanting to get one, but it's actually quite expensive for a used car, you need to look at more sports cars.

You need to change the oil more than usual, because it actually burns it, but this is normal.  You need to take it above 6,000rpm at least once everytime you drive it, because it opens intake valves and keeps them clear.  However, it gets poor gas mileage for such a small engine.  18 city, 23 highway I think.  But if you truly care about driving, then mileage shouldn't be an issue.

But its a blast to drive, and is quick.  It handles like a god, has a good engine note, and has the funnest little engine ever.  It revs efortlessly and smoothly, and it feels fantastic.  Get a manual though if you're a real petrol head, it's better.

Why is everyone saying used cars are cheap?!  Apparently you guys never looked at used cars only 8 or 6 years ago, they were like $5,000 cheaper.  Used car prices have gone up quite a bit.  No matter the car.
